Jack: This episode is medium so we’re looking at football words and phrases you need to describe what’s happening on the pitch or words and phrases fans and commentators on TV might use. There will be lots of phrasal verbs to learn at this level.
Rich: The phrase we are looking at in this episode is deadline day signing.
Jack: This is quite a topical phrase because it was deadline day in the Premier League the other day, wasn’t it?
Rich: Yes, it was. Let’s start by breaking down the phrase a little.
Jack: The word deadline is used to describe a specific point in time when something needs to be done or completed by.
Rich: Outside of football we often have deadlines we need to meet We often have deadlines connected to work and study.
Jack: Your boss might set deadlines for tasks at work or your school or university might set final deadlines for you to complete assignments.
Rich: Deadlines are set by people in authority and we have to meet their deadlines. To set deadlines and to meet deadlines - a couple of useful collocations there.
Jack: And if you don’t meet the deadline your boss or teacher might not accept your work because you have missed the deadline.
Rich: Sometimes we have to work very hard to meet deadlines because we have so little time. If this is the case we can say we’re working to a very tight deadline.
Jack: Let’s move back to the football. When is deadline day?
Rich: Deadline day or to give it it’s full name transfer deadline day happens twice a year. It’s the day that the transfer window closes.
Jack: So, after this day Premier League clubs are not allowed to make any more transfer or signings until the transfer window re-opens?
Rich: There are a few exceptions but generally, yes. I noticed that you used the word signing there.
Jack: Yes, a signing is a player who has joined a club. A transfer. Every club usually makes some new signings every year and there are often lots of new signings on transfer deadline day.
Rich: So our phrase in this episode deadline day signing is a player who has moved or transferred to a new club on deadline day.
Jack: It was deadline day last Monday. Were there any big deadline day signings.
Rich: Edinson Cavani was a deadline day signing for Manchester United.
Jack: And Thomas Partey was another deadline day signing. He moved from Athletico Madrid to Arsenal. That looks like a good move to me.
Jack: There is the final whistle!
Rich: We’ll be back soon with more Premier Vocabulary from Premier Skills English.
Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

No, they didn't.
I'm used to do so. It's common to me to write at my schedule deadlines for a lot of tasks that I have daily.

Did your club make any deadline day signings?
In my opinion, it doesn’t make sense. All the activitiy included transfering a player should be discussed and planned. Maybe it can be a marketing trick to drop transfer fee. I always beleive that last minute desicions might cause dissapointment.
Are you ever set deadlines and do you meet those deadlines?
I already have deadline which has been set by my boss--:)
Reading all the weekly reports that came from our branches and preparing them for presentation of meeting is my obligation. I enjoy my task although I’ve to meet this deadline.

deadline
1) the latest time or date by which something should be completed
2) a line drawn around a prison beyond which prisoners were liable to be shot
I couldn't agree more, Jack, the second, obviously etymological meaning, sounds horrific. :-(

I've never liked any deadlines, neither setting nor meeting them. The word itself sounds horrific to me. :-)

Yes , definitely during my CELTA intensive course there were lots of tasks , assignments and TPs set by my tutors because the course was very demanding but it ended up with bright.

We actually signed four players in the deadline day signings but I don't expect a lot honestly because they are not what the manager asked from the board.
