A cup tie is a phrase that means a fixture in a cup competition. When a club is set to play in a competition, they are said to be tied with another team, meaning the match with the other team has been arranged. So a match in the FA Cup between Manchester United and Liverpool that's due to take place in the future could be described as a cup tie.
