Motivation

Motivation

Motivation is one of the most important factors in successful learning, and teachers and trainers often talk about how they need to 'motivate' their learners. But what do they actually mean? Some try to motivate by making demands, while others have a softer approach; some shout, others remain calm; some talk to the group, others to individuals. Which works better?

This workshop will look at motivation in the context of language learning. We will discuss definitions, and its importance, before considering which aspects of motivation a teacher can actually influence most easily.

You can download all the materials from the workshop in the downloads section on the right. You can complete some of the materials online by taking a look at the activities in the activities section, and if you have any questions or comments about the workshop we would be happy to hear from you. You can add your comments in the discuss section. We hope you enjoy the workshop.

Motivation Workshop

The following activities on the topic of motivation are intended to help you think about what you learnt from the video.

Activity 1: In this activity, you will see 10 statements that are connected to motivation. 5 of the statements will help learner motivation and 5 of the statements won't help learner motivation. Can you separate the statements into the 2 groups?
Decide if the statement aids learner motivation.

Activity 2: In this next activity, look at these four aspects of motivation from the previous exercise. Which of these four aspects of motivation does each statement link to? More than one may be possible!
Match the statements to 4 aspects of motivation.

It's incredibly helpful especially in the field of classroom management which was one of my weaknesses honestly but I'm working on this area to improve myself in it.

I tried to access the Goal webcomic in order to use it in my ESL class, but the weblink just leads to the Premier Skills English homepage.
