I like watching football
Procedure
Pre-listening
Aim: to introduce the topic

Ask: What do you do in your free time? Do you go out a lot? Do you play any sport? What sports do you play? Do you like football? What’s your favourite football team?

Give handouts to students and invite them to look at the pictures of four people. Ask them if they can recognize them and if they know what their job is to elicit football players.
First watching
Aim: to get general idea about the video

Explain to students that they are going to watch a video clip about these four football players. Put the pictures with players’ names on the board. Play the video for the first time and ask students to find out what topics they are talking about.
Answers:

Second watching
Task 1
Aim: to develop listening comprehension

Play the first part of the video and tell students to write down the names of players who like doing the things in Task 1. Check the answers with the class.

Task 2
Aim: to revise and learn names of sports; to develop listening comprehension

Tell students to look at the pictures in Task 2 and match them with the words. Check the answers with class.

Now, play the second part of the video. Tell students to tick the sports football players mention in the video.

Task 3
Aim: to learn the difference between the verbs play, go and do when used with the names of sports

Now explain to students that we cannot use the verb play with every sport, but that we also use verbs go and do. Ask students to try to explain the rules for using these three verbs with names of sports. Invite individual students to read explained by the gymnast in Task 3
play + a sport with a ball,
do + a sport that shows one person’s skills,
go + a sport that ends in -ing.

Tell students to put the sports from Task 2 under the correct verb. Check the answers with the class.

Do: karate, gymnastics
Task 4
Aim: to develop listening comprehension

Read the expressions from the task 4. Explain that players will be using these phrases to talk about their favourite place at home and other sports they like watching. Play the second and the third part of the video. Tell students to match the names with the places these football players like going to and sports they like watching. Check the answers by asking Who likes going shopping? Who likes watching ice hockey? etc.

Task 5
Aim: to practice using like with gerund form of the verb

Tell students to use the information from the previous task and write sentences using the construction likes + verb-ing. Explain that we usually use the verb like followed by the verb with the ing ending. Invite a student to read the example sentence. Tell students to write the other sentences. Check the answers.

After listening
Task 6
Aim: to practice asking information about free time

Ask What do you do in your free time? Invite students to give answers (e.g. I play football. I watch TV. Etc.). Explain that they need to complete the first column of the table. When they finish tell students to talk to their partners and ask questions to find out information and complete the table about their partners. Tell students to refer to the example below table.
By the end of the lesson students will be able:
- to get general idea about the video
- to develop listening comprehension
- to revise and learn names of sports
- to learn the difference between the verbs play, go and do when used with the names of sports
- to practice using like with gerund form of the verb
- to practice asking information about free time
This lesson aims to teach different names of sports and some free time avtivities. Students will be able to express their likes and talk about their free time. It also aims to develop listening for general as well as for specific information.
