Buying players

Buying players

This is a speaking activity. It is based around a situation. The students have a description of a football club and some descriptions of players that they could buy. They have to work together to decide which players they should buy and which ones would best help the club.

Preparation
Print up enough descriptions of the football players so that each group can have one.

Football players for sale

1. Thomas Brown

He’s a star player and has scored lots of goals. He is sure to bring many more fans to the games and that could help to make more money from ticket sales. He’s getting older and will probably have to retire after a couple more seasons.

Price: £5 million

2. Matthew Black

He’s very young and hasn’t had much experience, but did score a goal in his very first match. A lot of people are saying he will be a big star, but he is undisciplined and is rumoured to argue a lot with other players.

Price: £3 Million

3. Patrick Green

He is a good reliable player, but isn’t really a big goal scorer. He’s fit and still has a quite a few years playing left.

Price: £2.5 million

4. Jonathan Grey

His career got off to a very good start, but he had some problems and missed a season. Nobody is sure what the problems were, but he now wants to return to the pitch. Some people say that his game has suffered and he no longer plays so well, but some people still believe he could become one of the best players in the country.

Price: £2 million

5. Frank Gold

He’s a young player and he doesn’t have much experience. He’s played a few games and has done well but hasn’t produced anything outstanding until his very last game of the season when he scored a fantastic goal. Some people say it was just luck, but other people that he has got over his initial nerves and has the potential to be a much better player.

Price: £1 million

6. Bobby White

He’s a great football player but is past his best years and coming to the end of his career as a player. He’s a had a few injuries lately, but when he does play he still draws crowds to the stadium.

Price: £4 million

Procedure

Put the students into small groups and tell them that they are the owners of a football club. Tell them the club has a lot of problems and they aren’t winning matches. Because of this fans have stopped coming to the games.

Tell them they have just been given £6 million pounds to spend on new players to help the club start to win again.

Give them the descriptions of the players and tell them they have to work as a group and decide how they will spend the money and which players they will buy.

Let the groups work together for about 5 mins to make their decision. Make sure every students has the opportunity to give their opinion.

Once they have decided put two groups together and get them to compare and justify their reasons.

Be sure to listen while the students discuss and and evaluate their speaking and make notes of any errors or gaps in their communication that you can help with at the end of the activity.
