Catching the Ball

Catching the Ball

A cunning striker, waiting for a high looping ball to drop, decides to tug his shirt out of his shorts and, using both hands, stretch it out like a blanket to cushion the ball. It works – the ball drops to his feet and he plays on.
Do you intervene?

You are the ref

Read the statements below and decide which is best. In this case, would you stop the striker?
Stop the striker - it's a foul

Well done. That's right.

Don’t let him play on. The player is guilty of unsporting behaviour, so stop play and issue a caution. You could argue that the player, in using his
shirt like this to cushion the ball, is guilty of deliberate hand ball. Restart play with a direct free-kick.

I saw this situation once, at a futsal match, in Brazil. The ref took the same decision, and showed the yellow card to the offender.

Well, he has been a referee for long, and his decision is considered right, but the rules of the game do not indicate that.

I've always thought of doing so during the match. Now I know that it will be officiated as unsporting behaviour.
