Football English Blog: Sanchez to United!

In all of our Football English blogs, we look at a topical item of football news and ask you to do three things:

  1. Read the article and look at the words in red. Think about what these words mean.
  2. Do the quiz at the end of the article. This quiz checks your understanding of the football English in the article.
  3. Answer the questions and give your opinion in the comments section.

This is our first Football English Blog and this week we're talking about Alexis Sanchez's move from Arsenal to Manchester Utd.

Alexis Sanchez signs for Manchester Utd!

For a long time it looked like Alexis Sanchez was going to sign for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. But, after City decided not to sign the Chilean, Sanchez has signed for the red side of Manchester.

Sanchez spent four successful years at Arsenal and has become one of the biggest stars in the Premier League. The forward has arrived at Old Trafford in a swap deal, with the Armenian, Henrikh Mkhitaryan moving to the Emirates to play for the Gunners.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has moved to Arsenal in a swap deal with Alexis Sanchez.
On transfer deadline day last summer it looked like Sanchez would move to Manchester City. City had bid £60m for the player which matched Arsenal’s valuation, but the deal fell through as Arsenal didn’t have time to recruit a replacement.

Sanchez is now a Manchester Utd player but where will he play for the Red Devils and can he help United’s title challenge?

Sanchez scored 80 goals in 165 appearances for Arsenal and won the FA Cup twice with the Gunners.
Alexis is a very versatile player. He can play anywhere across the front line. He can play on the left, on the right or down the middle. He can play as a centre-forward or as a number 10. This means that he will easily fit into United’s attacking line-up alongside Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford amongst others. United are twelve points behind City in the Premier League but, now they have won the race to sign Sanchez, can Sanchez help United in the race for the Premier League title?

It's twist of fate that brought both of the players to Italy/Seri A now. Sometimes, when a succesfull player transferred to the another team she/he doesn’t find ex-performance. Because of team spirit or adaptation.
I’m not sure there is "best deal" in football transfer market. We don’t know how they valuate and if it is right price.

Phrases;
 One of the leading bank has made a lot of profit by a swap deal which was signed last year. They bade 1.4 £ for 1$ for the end of the year. This price didn't match to the market's expected future valuation of dollar. Many financial analysts thought that the deal would fall through in a short time but it didn’t happen.

 A shocking and unexpected football event on transfer deadline day. Now she/he is moving to the Alaska to play for ElevenFire© Team wanted to recruit a versatile replacement for a title challenge.

 In these days midfielders who play across the front line and help to attackers are preferred.

P.S.
 In U.K. my compatriot police constable “Ceyhun Uzun” recognised in Her majesty the Queen's New Year Honours list for services to policing and charity. I'm proud of him.

I think both teams have done a good deal but it depends on how will the player will adapt in the playing plan
Wish the best of luck for both players :)

Sanchez didn't need Sanchez because they had had Raheem Sterling , Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez

He was supposed to be a perfect signing but it didn't go well for us but he remains one of the best players in English football history and I think Mkhitaryan is a very good player as well :)

As a United fan am excited about the Alexis move to United and I think he will be good number 10 for United.
It's however unfortunate to loose Henrikh to Arsenal. I think he will be a good fit for arsenal going forward especially with the arrival of Aubemeyang a formal team mate at Dortmund.

United has made the best deal in my opinion.

City have been waiting for Sanchez since last season.

Sanchez was first Gardiola choice. It seems today from rumors that City have chosen Mahrez finally and that will be desperate for Leicester fans.

Correct me.

Thanks for this great new section which without doubt will help us with our English learning. I really have the honour to post the first comment on it!

Alexis Sanchez is a perfect signing for Manchester
United, because he's a versatile player, an experienced footballer and a winner. I wonder if his signing will convince Mourinho to taking more risks by playing more attacking football rather than sitting deep and waiting for counterattacks when playing the big team.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is a good player, although I'm not sure if he's the perfect replacement for the Chilean. Yes, he has got the talent, he's younger than Sanchez. Besides, I think he has something to prove. Maybe the upcoming days will show us whether he was a good replacement for the Chilean or not.

It's hard to say who got the best deal as this will be determined by both their performances going forward.
Yes, they needed him as he could add more depth and quality to the squad. However, I don't think they were desperate to signing him because their team is doing exceptionally well. I think Man United really needed him.
