Five United need to be more environmentally friendly.

Don't throw that away!

Don't throw that away!

In this issue, the team think about what they can do to clean up the environment in their neighbourhood.

Adhi and the team are playing football in front of the youth centre. There is a bin in the background that is overflowing with rubbish. The coach calls everyone to the youth centre - she says that there is something really important she wants to talk about. The kids look worried and walk towards the youth centre building.

The coach asks the kids to sit down and then tells them that the school wants them to submit a plan to show how they can create less waste and be more environmentally friendly. Santi is upset - she argues; we don’t do anything wrong. There are factories and cars and busses that make pollution. Why is it our responsibility? The coach listens to the kids and asks them to think about it.

Understanding

At the beginning of the story, the team think that environmental problems are caused by factories, car drivers and big businesses. They don't realise that they can be more environmentally friendly, too. In this first activity, think about different actions you can do in your everyday life and decide if they are helpful to the environment or harmful to the environment.

Activity 1: The team need have been asked to think about what they can do to help the environment. To help the environment we need to know what actions are harmful to the environment and what actions aren't. In this activity, put the actions into 2 groups: things that are harmful to our environment and things that are friendly. Which ones do you do?
Can you put the actions into the correct group?

Rini and Santi get on the bus to go home. Rini buys a bottle of water; Santi buys a snack (in packaging). Rini talks about getting some new sandals. Santi asks if there is anything wrong with her old sandals. Rini says they are not fashionable. They both get off the bus and throw their rubbish away.

Adhi goes to see the coach. He is drinking a bottle of water. The coach’s office is full of reusable and reused items. Pen holder Plant pots A box of bags to be reused He asks coach about a match against a local rival. Coach says that the match will be tough. The other team is very good. Coach is eating her lunch out of an old icecream box (the plastic container has a label - ice cream). Adhi asks ‘Are you eating ice cream for lunch?’ The coach says it’s not ice cream, it’s just her normal lunch in the box. Adhi throws his water bottle away but there are three bins (yellow - blue and green) The coach says ‘that’s the wrong bin... plastics go in the yellow bin’. Adhi looks confused but moves his bottle anyway.

Adhi meets Budi and Iwan and they start walking through the village. Budi asks them what they think about the environment plan. Adhi says that he doesn’t have any ideas. He points to a pile of rubbish and says ‘All this rubbish is horrible.’ Budi suggests that they do something about it, but Adhi disagrees saying that the rubbish is really smelly. He thinks again and understands why the Coach has different bins. He tells the others that if they use things again, there wouldn’t be so much rubbish.

Grammar - Pronouns

We often use pronouns to avoid repeating the same word in our writing or when we are speaking. There are many different types of pronouns. Pronouns include: he, she, it, we, they, his, their, who, one and ones. There were a few examples in the comic, in the first two examples the noun is replaced with the pronoun 'it'. It's not necessary to repeat the noun again and again:

"She probably wants us to tidy this place up!" "Yeah, it's a bit of a mess!"

"I always recycle paper so it can be used again."

In this example, the noun is replaced with ones because the noun 'sandals' is plural. We often use 'one' or 'ones' to substitute countable nouns so we don't need to repeat them:

Rini: "I need some new sandals. Do you want to come to the shopping centre?" Santi: "Do you really need some new ones. You only bought those ones last week." Rini: "I've seen some really cool ones in my favourite shop."

Now, have a look at the activity below to check your understanding. If you want to know more, check out the Grammar Pages on our Learn English website.

Activity 2: We use 'one' or ones' to replace or substitute countable nouns. Have a go at this activity and decide if you should use 'one' or ones'.
Can you write the correct answer in each sentence?

It’s raining and the kids are inside at the youth centre. The television is on in the background. Budi sees a report on the environment and turns up the volume. The kids watch the report. The report is on pollution on beaches. We see an image of sandals, plastic bottles and food wrappers washing up on a beach. The kids look sad, but don’t say anything. Santi tells Rini that she doesn’t want to buy new sandals anymore.

The coach arrives and says hello. Budi tells her that they have some ideas for their report. The coach asks what they think they can do. Rini says we can try not to make as much rubbish. We throw too much away. We shouldn’t buy things we don’t need and just throw them away. Adhi says ‘We can try to use things again, like coach does with her lunch box.’ Coach says - that’s a good idea. Iwan says: We can recycle lots of things like newspapers and magazines and if we can recycle, reuse and reduce the amount of rubbish we create, we will use less of the world’s resources.

The report says RRR. The team promises to reduce the amount of rubbish they create, reuse whatever they can and recycle the things that they can’t reuse. At the end of the story, the kids are playing football. The bins have been replaced with three recycling bins and look neat and tidy.

Vocabulary

There were quite a few difficult words and phrases in this issue of the comic. For example:

"They want us to show how we can be more environmentally friendly."

"It's the factories and cars that make all the pollution."

Have a go at the activity below and see if any of the words or expressions are new for you.

Activity 3: In this activity, you have to match the words and phrases from the story with the descriptions.
Match the words to their definitions.

Our planet is facing big problems due to rubbish on the land and even in the sea. It causes some nasty feeling in our noses. That's why we need to recycle, reuse and reduce.

Why would we go and buy new things all the time? Some people even go shopping when they are in a bad mood. That's totally wrong. The thing that we often don't understand is that when we buy smth.we actually pay it with our time that we spent to earn the same amount of money, and our time is precious, isn't it?

No, it's not easy at all since we still don't have a descent recycling center or anything. So, we have to find a proper solution and reuse old things. Unfortunately, some of them throw it away.

Three Rs are all about environmental protection. Those are simple things to do, but so often ignored by many people. Reusing, reducing and recycling can make this world a better place to live in.
