Introduction
Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our weekly round-up section called ‘This Week’ on Premier Skills English.
Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. That’s right. We’re going to discuss all the latest football action from last weekend in the Premier League.
Rich: And not only that, we’ve also got lots of interesting words and phrases to help you talk about football in English.
Jack: And we want you to use and practise these phrases by interacting with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.
Rich: If you listen to us on Spotify or Apple Podcasts, you can leave your comments in the review section. We do read all the reviews and would love to hear from you.
Jack: You can find all our latest content on the Premier Skills English homepage or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page.
Rich: Let’s start with this week’s headlines!
Headlines
Rich: Chelsea end City’s unbeaten run.
Jack: Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 to end City’s unbeaten start to the season. In the first half, it looked like City were going to run away with it but they missed a few chances and Chelsea scored against the run of play. The second half was more even but Chelsea’s David Luiz got a second to hand City their first Premier League defeat since April.
Rich: Salah runs the show at Bournemouth.
Jack: A Mohamed Salah hat-trick gave Liverpool a 4-0 win away at Bournemouth and sent the Reds to the top of the table. Bournemouth gave Liverpool a run for their money in the first half and Salah’s first goal should have been disallowed for offside. In the second half, Liverpool ran away with it, scoring three more goals.
Rich: Spurs in best Premier League start.
Jack: Spurs have had their best-ever start to a Premier League season but they still find themselves six points behind Liverpool. Spurs beat Leicester 2-0. Heung Min Son opened the scoring and Dele Alli added the second before running the clock down against their hosts.
Rich: So, just one unbeaten team left?
Jack: Are you surprised it’s Liverpool?
Rich: No, not at all. We just need to win all our games now and we’ll win the league.
Jack: There are no easy games in the Premier League.
Rich: No, I don’t think we’ll win them all but Liverpool are the team to catch now.
Vocabulary alert!
Rich: In our vocabulary alert, we look at some football English that we used in this week’s headlines.
Jack: This week’s words and phrases all use the word run. The words are: an unbeaten run, to run away with something, against the run of play, to run the show, a run for your money and to run the clock down.
Rich: Let’s start with an unbeaten run. An unbeaten run is run of matches or a sequence of games when a team hasn’t lost. Liverpool haven’t lost for 17 matches so they are on a seventeen match unbeaten run.
Jack: We use the preposition on with this phrase. Liverpool are on a seventeen match unbeaten run. We can be more general by just saying Liverpool are on a good run at the moment.
Rich: We can also say they are on a bit of a bad run at the moment. This means the team aren’t playing well.
Jack: The next phrase is to run away with something. This means to take total control of the match. Liverpool were only winning 1-0 at halftime but they ran away with the match in the second half They scored three more goals.
Rich: Manchester City were the best team against Chelsea but Chelsea scored against the run of play.
Jack: Against the run of play is an expression we use when a team scores when the other team were playing better than them.
Rich: We said that Mohamed Salah ran the show against Bournemouth. To run the show means to be the star player, to be the leader and in control of everything.
Jack: The next expression is a run for your money. This means that one team challenged the other for a good part of the game but didn’t succeed in the end. Bournemouth gave Liverpool a run for their money in the first half.
Rich: And the final expression is to run the clock down. We hear this expression a lot near the end of a match. It’s used to describe a team that slows the game down because they are winning and don’t want to give the other team an opportunity to score.
Jack: So, there are six phrases for you to learn. See if you can use them in the comments section at the bottom of the page on the Premier Skills English website.
Rich: It was great to see Rafael Robson from Brazil, Elghoul and Khaldoun83 from Algeria and Thaitn from Vietnam all using the vocabulary we taught in Matchweek 15.
Football Awards
Jack: Right, every week, we give out three Matchweek awards.
Rich: The awards are Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Goal of the Week.
Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices.
Rich: Let’s start with Player of the Week. Heung Min Son and Dele Alli were excellent for Spurs, Ashley Young and Marcus Rashford great for Manchester Utd and N’Golo Kante and DAvil Luiz superb for Chelsea.
Jack: But our Player of the Week is Liverpool’s, Mohamed Salah. It was Salah’s second hat-trick for Liverpool and his second goal was sublime.
Rich: Now, Team of the Week. Good wins for Liverpool, Cardiff. Wolves, Spurs, Burnley, Arsenal, West Ham and Manchester United, but our Team of the Week is Chelsea.
Jack: Chelsea are the first team to beat Manchester City this season so definitely deserve this week’s award. Finally our Goal of the Week award.
Rich: We’ve already spoken about Salah, Felipe Anderson scored a great goal for West Ham and Heung Min Son scored another fine goal for Spurs. But our Goal of the Week award goes to Lucas Torreira of Arsenal. A spectacular bicycle kick.
Matchweek Prediction
Jack: Every week, Rich predicts the result of one Premier League match and we want you to make your prediction, too.
Rich: Not many of you predicted a Chelsea win against Manchester City last time so let’s see if you can do better this week.
Jack: What match is it?
Rich: It’s another massive Premier League match and probably the biggest rivalry in the Premier League. It’s Liverpool against Manchester United. As a Liverpool fan, I’m always nervous about this one and this week is no different. But, Liverpool also have a big mid-week match against Napoli while United have already qualified for the next round of the Champions League. This makes me more worried and United found their scoring boots last week scoring four against Fulham. However, I think we can win so I’m going to go for a very nervy 2-1 win that will keep Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.
Jack: I think you’re right to be nervous so I’m going for a 2-1 win to United.
Rich: Make your predictions on the page below. You get one point if you predict the right result and three points if you predict the right score.
Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this football round-up. Join the discussion at the bottom of the page.
Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

- This week I totally agree with your choices especially player of the week because Mohammed Salah run the show at not only Bournemouth but at the whole of Europe, no player scored a hatrick so far this week; when it comes to Chelsea, despite of scoring against the run of play the diserve the three points especially their diffenders because they delivered a good performance.

Correct me, thanks!
Of course, I totally agree with the awards. Especially Chelsea, they are the only one in The Premier League who can beat City this season.
Arsenal won again, and they are on a 21 match unbeaten run in all competitions under Unai Emery.
Spurs won againt The foxes. Leicester City gave Tottenham a run for their money, but nearly the end of the first half, Heung Min Son scored an important goal for Tottenham. In the second half, Spurs ran away with the match. They scored another goal, and then ran the clock down to the end.

Hello Thaitn,
Nice to read your sentences. I am not fit to correct any mistake but I can assess that Gunners under Unai Emery have already lost some matches unfortunately. But I might say that this season is better than last one.

I totally agree with this week three awards. Although the Torreira goal was not from very far from the net it was beautiful and important. Huddersfield gave Arsenal a run for their money before Lucas scored his bicycle goal. They run the clock down all the second half time looking for a nile draw.
The reds are still in their unbeaten run. Will they stay on this run until the second leg of the FL championship?
