Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. Every Monday we discuss last weekend’s action, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, and make some predictions for next weekend.

Rich: We want you to practise your English and interact with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Jack: You can do this on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.

Rich: There were some big matches in Matchweek 13 so let’s get on with this week’s round up!

Headlines

Rich: Record-breaking City go marching on.

Jack: Manchester City stay eight points clear at the top of the Premier League. A 2-1 win away at Huddersfield was a club record 11th consecutive Premier League win for City and an eleventh consecutive away win in all competitions - this is another record for a Premier League club. City didn’t have it all their own way though and had to come from behind at half-time. This was the first time City had done this since 1995!

Rich: Palace show signs of life at the bottom.

Jack: Mamadou Sakho scored a 92nd-minute winner for Crystal Palace to give them a vital three points at home to Stoke City. Palace stay bottom of the table but they are now only three points from safety. Xherdan Shaqiri scored a brilliant solo goal for Stoke but Palace came from behind to win with goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek and then Sakho got the winner in the dying seconds.

Rich: Salah’s strike can’t give Liverpool the win.

Jack: Mohamed Salah struck his 15th Premier League goal of the season and remains the Premier League’s top scorer this season with ten goals. Salah’s goal was cancelled out by Chelsea’s Willian when his 85th-minute cross looped over everybody and into the Liverpool net.

Definition Alert!

Jack: Salah’s goal was cancelled out by Chelsea’s Willian. Cancelled out? Let’s have a look at this phrase.

Rich: To cancel out or to cancel something out is a phrasal verb which is used to describe two things that are equally important but have an opposite effect.

Jack: For example, you might say the advantages and disadvantages cancel each other out or the money a business made this year cancelled out the money it lost last year.

Rich: In football, we use the phrase when one team scores an equaliser. The equaliser for one team cancels out the earlier goal for the other team.

Jack: So, Willian’s goal for Chelsea cancelled out Salah’s goal for Liverpool. Salah’s goal was cancelled out by Chelsea’s Willian.

Rich: It was a fluke!!

Jack: A fluke! Another nice word let’s see if any of our listeners can give a good definition for this word and tell us why you are using it here!

Rich: Mmm …

Matchweek Awards

Rich: Right, every Monday, we give out three matchweek awards. Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Match of the Week.

Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …

Rich: Last week, not all of you agreed with our choices.

Jack: For example, MS Aboelsafa from Egypt felt that we should have chosen Manchester Utd’s Paul Pogba as Player of the Week last week.

Rich: And Elghoul from Algeria thought the Team of the Week should have been Manchester City for their win away at Leicester.

Jack: They're never easy these choices. Who have we chosen as this week’s Player of the Week?

Rich:  Lots of great performances this week. Raheem Sterling was great for City in their win against Huddersfield, Mohamed Salah and Eden Hazard were the best players on the pitch in the Liverpool - Chelsea match and Charlie Austin was great for Southampton in their 4-1 win against Everton.

Jack: But we are going to go for Watford’s Richarlison. The Brazilian player is one of the best signings this season and his strong performances have pushed Watford into the top half of the table.

Rich: I predicted Watford to finish bottom and be relegated this season. How wrong can you be? Right, what about our Team of the Week?

Jack: We could go for Watford. 3-0 away at Newcastle is a great performance. Southampton also had a great win, but our Team of the Week this week is ... West Bromwich Albion.

Rich: West Brom didn’t win but it was a battling performance to get a 1-1 draw away at Tottenham. West Brom went to Tottenham with no manager and no form so it was a great point for them.

Jack: Finally, what about Match of the Week?

Rich: Our Match of the Week this week is … Huddersfield v Manchester City. On paper it was a real mismatch, but Huddersfield showed lots of fight and determination and City showed that they could also battle as well as play. The result was always in doubt and City had to wait until the final few minutes to get the winner.

Fantasy Football

Rich: What’s been happening in Fantasy Football this week, Jack?

Jack: The top scoring player in matchweek 13 was Watford’s Marvin Zeegelaar with 14 points. I bet not many of you had him in your team!

Rich: And in the Premier Skills League the team at the top is still the Premier Skills team!

Jack: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 13 is  Some Villagers managed by Aleksandar a Manchester Utd fan from Montenegro.

Rich: Well done Aleksandar from Montenegro!

Jack: And a correction from last week. The Fantasy Team of the Week last week was Mohamed Saad from Egypt. His Modric Team scored an amazing 104 points!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Last week’s prediction was Liverpool v Chelsea. Rich thought it would finish 4-0 to Liverpool but it finished all-square in a 1-1 draw.

Rich: Yes, a bit disappointing we should have won.

Jack: Which match are you going to predict this week, Rich?

Rich: Matchweek fourteen’s big match is Arsenal v Manchester Utd. This match is always fascinating and it will be again this week. Both teams found it difficult last week but eventually broke down the opposition defence to win 1-0. Manchester Utd’s defence has been strong this season but I fancy Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to turn on the style for Arsenal. I think Arsenal will win this one - just. Final score: Arsenal 2-1 Manchester Utd

Jack: Thanks, Rich. For once, I’m going to agree with you!

Rich: We want you to make your prediction at the bottom of the page on the website. Are you a good predictor?

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up. Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.

Rich: Also, if you want to improve your English, take a look at our weekly podcast. There is a link on the side of this page.

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

The Big Match

Arsenal v Manchester Utd

Rich's prediction this week is the match between Arsenal and Manchester Utd. Rich thinks that it will be a 2-1 win for Arsenal and, for a change, Jack agrees with him! Have a listen to what Rich and Jack say and then make your prediction at the bottom of the page.

Last week Rich thought that the Liverpool would beat Chelsea 4-0 but it finished all square (level). In fact, none of our listeners sat on the fence (this phrase means to avoid making a decision) because everybody predicted either a win for Chelsea or Liverpool.West Brom's Ben Foster had a good game in goal for West Brom against Spurs.

In this case the word "fluke" pointed out coincidence or luck. It's used because this goal cancelled out other team's advantage.
Phrases
• High inflation rate has already cancelled out accumulated profits of the earlier years.
• I've it all my own way, I'll not be provoked by your attitude.
• There weren't signs of life in the city after occupant military forces withdrew.
• Unexpected health fees wiped out all my savings.I'm regret of not getting health insurance.

Hi there,

As for the match of the week, it's going to end up with a draw: Arsenal 1, ManU 1. Arsenal is very strong playing home games and ManU is always a dangerous team with Lukaku, who can turn into a goal-scoring beast. Sanchez shall make it 1-0 for Arsenal, but Lukaku will cancel this out and score an equaliser.

p.s.

We were wondering why wasn't there anything about Fantasy Football during the podcast?

Correct me.

I early went to the café to get a seat in the front queue for the Liverpool vs Chelsea game, then I enjoyed the analysis of the game. I was very excited and when the formation was brought, I became sad that Mane, Firmino and Winaldoum were benched. I couldn't understand why? since it was a must win game and we supposed to start with the best starting line we had.

Chelsea didn't play that well, and Liverpool failed to kill the game or at least not to blow the lead, but that starting XI seemed to have reduced Liverpool's attacking force and I was gutted when Willian came off the beach to score that late equaliser.

I watched Liverpool vs Sevilla in the CL this midweek and couldn't believe my eyes that we blew 3-0 lead away! Liverpool have a bad reputation of easily conceding late goals this season. I wonder if Klopp is working to improve this Liverpool's leaky defence because it became like a feature of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. If someone kicked a ball of a dinosaur eggs size, I bet he would score against Liverpool!

I also watched Man Utd vs Brighton from kick-off to full time. In fact Man Utd were lucky to get all three points because Brighton played bravery at Old Trafford and created lots of changes. besides, they were solid at the back and cou from ld have scored at any moment from those many counter attacks they created they were only missing the final touch and some luck. If not that deflected ball Ashley Young -- the player whom I like his hair cut -- the visitors could have sealed at least a point.

Hi Khaldoun83

Don't worry! Salah is having an exceptional season and he had a great game against Chelsea. Not sure about City being Team of the Week - they got a late winner against a newly promoted team.
