This week, West Ham's season started early with the Europa League. In this week's podcast, Rich and Jack talk about West Ham's early start and the Fair Play award that qualified the Hammers to play in the Europa League.

Jack: Hello my name’s Jack and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast.
Rich: Hi everyone. I’m Rich and every week we talk about football and help you with your English.
Jack: What are we going to talk about this week, Rich?
Rich: Well, the summer’s over!
Jack: What?! It’s only just started!
Rich: It’s over for West Ham! Their season starts this week!
Jack: Really? Why?
Rich: West Ham are playing in the Europa League qualifying after finishing top of the Fair Play League last season!
Jack: It’s over for West Ham, their season starts? It’s a bit difficult to understand what you’ve just said Rich.
Rich: West Ham’s summer has finished because they are playing the first game of their season this week.
Jack: How’s that? The Premier League doesn’t kick off for a month. How are West Ham starting early?
Rich: It’s true, it’s a little complicated but the three European countries with the best fair play record are given an extra place in the Europa League.
Jack: And why West Ham?
Rich: Well West Ham finished top of the Premier League’s fair play league so they were given the place in the Europa League.
Jack: That’s fantastic news for the Premier League - to be one of the fairest leagues in football.
Rich: Yes, and fantastic news for West Ham, who will see European football at the Boleyn Ground for the final time.
Jack: Yes, they’re moving to the Olympic Stadium in 2016/17. What about fair play? What does it really mean?
Rich: Fair play means playing a game in an honest and truthful way - always following the rules.
Jack: So it’s about not making dirty tackles?
Rich: Dirty tackles?
Jack: You know very bad challenges. We often talk about dirty or clean tackles.
Rich: Yes, I think if you made too many dirty tackles you wouldn’t win the fair play league.
Jack: But winning the fair play league isn’t only about the players, is it?
Rich: No it’s not. Clubs are given points for the respect that players, officials and fans give to the other team, referees and the other teams’ fans.
Jack: What’s this word Rich, respect?
Rich: It means to be polite and not to insult or hurt other people.
Jack: So when players shake hands after the match and do what the referee tells them without shouting or complaining, that’s showing respect.
Rich: That’s right, yes.
Jack: Right listeners. We’re asking you if you think it’s fair that teams are given prizes for fair play?
Rich: Or do you think prizes can only ever be for results on the pitch?

It's a good idea to give appreciation to the team who play fair. We sometimes see some players playing dirty. It's not good for football. Sometimes it's dangerous and can hurt other players. So, to the team who behave very well, we have to appreciate them. It's good for any sport. We want to watch a competitive match and want our team to win, but on the other side, we love humanity too.

Hi,
A football match is not only a competition. It involves many other things like behaving honestly, giving a hand when opponent fall on the pitch, to show respect to the referee and fans during the game. So giving prize for fair-play encourages teams to be fair and adds beauties to football.

The course is so complicated and the terms to define have closely descriptions. Honestly, I don't understand what happened with West Ham. In addition, there is something wrong with this podcast: there is no section of (how much did you understand), neither the comments suggestions. The big problem that when I submit my answers, they can't be downloaded in my profile page, like for the others eight podcasts (e.g. Premier Skills English Podcast 8 04-01-2016 100 3/5).

It's nice to see West Ham playing european matches but it would be much better if the Premier League teams payed more attention on that competition. I don't remember a team that made a good result in the UEFA league since M'boro's final vs Sevilla. It's quite different from the Ch.League if you ask me.

It's true that it appears that the Premier League is often the priority but Fulham got to the final in 2010 and Chelsea won it a couple of years ago.

Hello Rich.I know that Liverpool finished first in the fair play league, but they got the sixth ranking so they qualified to the eurpe league and as a result of getting the 2 ranking in the fair play league.Is that correct?I want to thank you Jack and the other members of this website.

Thanks for your comment. The rule is; if you qualify automatically for Europe then the team that is next in the Fair Play Table, takes their place. This season, West Ham qualified for the Europa League through the Fair Play League. I think UEFA have decided to stop doing this, so it was the last time this will happen.

This season, West Ham qualified for the Europa League through the Fair Play League. I think UEFA have decided to stop doing this, so it was the last time this will happen.

I would love to West Ham won the Europa League title this season.
Fair Play is the one of the greatest things in football. If you have respect for opposite side and have a good behaviour on the pitch and beside them that deserves an award.
I don't like player whose simulated fouls and uses bad things to score goals.
