Welcome to the first in a new series of podcasts on Premier Skills English. In these podcasts, we are going to talk about football and look at some useful phrases and words. This week we're talking about the word 'debut' and Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
How much did you understand?
Jack: Hello and welcome to the first in a new series of podcasts on Premier Skills English. My name is Jack, I’m an Arsenal fan and I live in Manchester.
Rich: And I’m Rich, and I’m a Liverpool fan and we both work on the Premier Skills English website.
Jack: So Rich... what are we doing here? Why are we making these podcasts?
Rich: Well , Jack the Premier Skills English web site is for people who love football and are learning English. In these podcasts we are going to talk about football and look at some useful phrases and words.
Jack: Yes - so these podcasts will help you improve your listening skills and could teach you some new language.
Rich: So this is our first podcast what are we going to talk about?
Jack: Well, Rich, there’s a football English phrase that people use to talk about the first time someone plays for a club. Do you know what word I’m thinking of?
Rich: I think I do. Last weekend, Ruben Loftus-Cheek played his first ever match for Chelsea... He made his debut for Chelsea.
Jack: Yes - debut - that’s the word. Did he play well?
Rich: Yes he did. He had a great debut. I think he’s going to be a player to watch in the future.
Jack: So the word debut. Is it only used in football?
Rich: No. It’s also used to talk about other first performances - like when actors first act on stage or in a show.
Jack: You need to be careful with the spelling. - it’s a bit funny. The word is spelled: DEBUT so it looks like debut.
Rich: So in our debut podcast, we’re looking at the word debut.
Jack: and that’s what we’re going to do each week... we’re going to talk about football and the premier league and look at a topical football English phrase.
Rich: Yes, a phrase that football fans like you and me and anyone listening use when we talk about football.
Jack: In the Chelsea match, Loftus-cheek wasn’t the only player making his debut.
Rich: Yes, there was a player making his debut for Liverpool, too. So listeners... here’s a question for you. Do you know who made their debut for Liverpool last weekend.

Yes, I agree with you. Loftus-Cheek has played a few times for Chelsea now. Jerome Sinclair has now left Liverpool and is playing for Watford in the Premier League.
