A New Home - 16/17 ep.3

A New Home - 16/17 ep.3

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich and Jack talk about the latest action in the Premier League; including West Ham's first ever Premier League match at their new stadium. The language focus is on the structures 'get used to' and 'be used to', which are phrases that are used to describe things that were unusual but have become normal. In our pronunciation section, we have a look at how we pronounce 'used to'. We have news about our Fantasy Football team after Gameweek 2, another Premier League prediction for you and a new football phrase.

How much did you understand?

Vocabulary

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

Zlatan has settled into the Premier League straight away.

Burnley only had 19% possession but beat Liverpool 2-0.

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Activity 1: In this activity, try to match the words and phrases to their definitions. All of the words were in this week's podcast.
Can you match the words to their definitions?

West Ham kicked off at London Stadium last weekend.

Language - 'Get used to'

In this week's podcast, Jack and Rich looked at two different structures: 'get used to' and 'be used to'. We use 'get used to' to talk about something that was unusual in the past but is becoming less unusual because we have become accustomed to it. This might be because we have done it or seen something more often.

The basic pattern for using 'get used to' is: get used to + noun or the gerund (-ing form). Take a look at these examples from the podcast:

West Ham are getting used to their new stadium.

Visitors to the UK have to get used to the British weather.

Language - 'Be used to'

We use 'be used to' to describe something that was unusual in the past but is normal now.

The basic pattern for using 'be used to' is the same: be used to + noun or the gerund (-ing form). Take a look at these examples from the podcast:

Arsenal are used to their new stadium.

I am used to driving on the right.

Something to remember: Be/Get used to can be used with past, present and future tenses.

Let's test your understanding of 'be/get used to'. In this activity, try to complete the sentences with the correct word.

Activity 2: In this activity, complete the gaps with the appropriate form of 'be used to'.
Can you write the correct phrase?

Christian Stuani scored the goal of the week to give Middlesbrough their first win of the season.

Pronunciation - Used to

In this week's podcast, we looked at how to pronounce the phrase 'used to'. The most important things to remember are that when we are speaking we don't usually say the '-ed' sound in 'used' and we use a schwa in 'to', so it sounds like 't' instead of the number 'two'. Look at the words in bold, these are the weak forms - the words that are not pronounced fully.

West Ham are getting used to their new stadium.

I’ve got used to siestas on hot Sunday afternoons!

Visitors have to get used to driving on the left in the UK.

Try to say these sentences quickly. Have a listen to the podcast again and try to repeat them like Jack and Rich. Tell us in the comments section if you find this difficult or easy.

Hull City have surprised a few people this season. Can they beat Manchester Utd on Sunday?

Welcome

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcast.

Jack: Hi everyone. I’m Jack and every week we talk about football and help you with your English.

Rich: We’re going to be talking about last weekend’s Premier League action and our language focus is on get used to and be used to.

Jack: Of course, West Ham played their first Premier League game in their new stadium on Sunday. We’ll talk more about that later.

Rich: We also have our pronunciation section to help you with some tricky sounds, our fantasy football section with news of our points after Gameweek 2 in the Premier League, and, of course, our football phrase and football prediction sections for you.

Jack: Let’s start by talking about what’s been happening on the website this week.

Social

Rich: Let’s start with some of the comments from the Premier Skills community. My favourite comment last week came from Alex from Ukraine. Last week we were talking about the verbs ‘say’ and ‘tell’ in the podcast and Alex used a couple of great sentences to show how these words are used.

Jack: Yes, I saw. He said, ‘I needn’t say a great deal about Liverpool’s first match.’ and then in his next commen,t he said, ‘I can’t tell you anything about the other matches.’

Rich: We’re really happy when we see you using the language we introduce in the podcast in the comments section. So, more of that, please.

Jack: Aragorn1986 from Montenegro and Davilillons from Spain told us about matches they watched. Aragorn1986 saw Chelsea against West Ham and Davilillons watched Man City against Sunderland. We’re very happy to read your match reports in the comment section and if you want us to correct your match reports just write correct me at the start of your message and we’ll be happy to give you some advice and corrections.

Rich: It was also good to see that lots of you helped us choose the Premier Skills Fantasy Football team for Gameweek 2, using our voting buttons on our Fantasy Football page. We did even better last week - we got 62 points and we’re doing better than 2.8 million teams in the fantasy football game.

Jack: And congratulations to Caligula, managed by Andra Tetuko from Indonesia who is top of the Premier Skills Fantasy Football League after Gameweek 2.

Rich: That’s great! The page for Gameweek 3 of Fantasy Football is already on the website. There is a link on the side of this page. Choose the team you want, select the captain and let us know who to buy in the comments section - we really need some new defenders!

Jack: Last week,  you made lots of Premier League predictions using the vote on the podcast, too. We’ll have an update and a new prediction for you later in the show.

Latest news

Jack: What happened in the Premier League last weekend?

Rich: The top of the table looks exciting if you are a fan of one of the Manchester clubs. City are top after a 4-1 win away to Stoke City and Utd are second after a 2-0 win against Southampton.

Jack: Ibrahimovic scored 2 for Utd and Aguero 2 for City - that looks like an exciting battle this season.

Rich: Yes - Zlatan has settled into the Premier League straight away.

Jack: What else happened last weekend?

Rich: So, we have four teams at the top of the table with 2 wins from 2 games and as expected it’s the two Manchester clubs, Chelsea and Hull City.

Jack: Hull City? Really? I don’t think that was expected.

Rich: No, I’m just joking. It’s an amazing start from The Tigers. It’s only the second time in Premier League history that a newly promoted team have won their first two matches.

Jack: And the other two promoted teams have had a good start, too.

Rich: Yes, they have. Burnley had a great 2-0 win against Liverpool - they only had 19% possession in that game. And Middlesbrough are still unbeaten after a 2-1 win at Sunderland in the North-East derby.

Jack: Cristhian Stuani, Middlesbrough’s Uruguayan striker, scored the goal of the week in that match. Check it out if you haven’t seen it yet!

Rich: Another big story was West Ham’s first Premier League match at London Stadium - their new home.

Jack: They got a 1-0 win against Bournemouth so that should help them settle in. It’s always difficult to get used to something new.

Rich: Yes, it must be very different for the players and the fans. It will probably take some time for them to get used to it.

Jack: I knew we were going to talk about this so I prepared a quick quiz for you, Rich.

Rich: OK, go on.

Jack: West Ham are still getting used to their new home but they are the tenth club to play Premier League football at two different grounds. The other 9 are now used to playing at their new homes. How many of the clubs can you name?

Rich: Ok, 10 clubs. West Ham, errr, Arsenal, Manchester City, errrr I’m not sure…. Sunderland?

Jack: Very good. That’s four.

Rich: I think we’ll leave the rest for our listeners. If you know the 10 teams that have played Premier League football at two stadiums let us know in the comments section.

Jack: And try not to ask your friend Mr.Google!

Language Focus

Rich: In the last section, we used the phrase ‘to get used to’. Jack said, ‘It’s always difficult to get used to something new’ when talking about West Ham.

Jack: We use this phrase to talk about something that was new or unusual but is now less unusual because we have done this thing or seen this thing a few times.

Rich: Jack said, ‘West Ham are getting used to their new stadium’. Using ‘get used to describes the process of something that is not normal becoming normal.

Jack: When this process is over we can say that we ‘are used to something’ so we use the verb ‘to be’ plus ‘used to’. Arsenal moved to their new stadium - The Emirates - in 2006. They have been playing there for 10 years so they are used to it now. Arsenal are used to playing at the Emirates.

Rich: When we use be used to or get used to the next word in the sentence is either a noun or a gerund which is the -ing form of the verb. So, you can say ‘Arsenal are used to playing at their stadium’ or ‘Arsenal are used to their stadium’.

Jack: I think it’s a really useful phrase. You’ve lived in Spain for many years. What have you got used to exactly, Rich?

Rich: I’ve got used to siestas on hot Sunday afternoons!

Jack: That doesn’t sound that difficult to get used to.

Rich: What do you think people have to get used to if they move to the UK?

Jack: They have to get used to driving on the left. And they have to get used to the British weather!

Rich: So, let’s ask our listeners. What things would people have to get used to if they came to live in your country?

Jack: And, what things would be difficult to get used to if you came to live in the UK?

Rich: Let’s see your answers in the comments section below.

Pronunciation

Rich: This week’s pronunciation focus is on the phrase ‘get used to’. And this phrase describes the process when something new, like a new home or new jo,b becomes normal. West Ham moved into a new stadium and now, they are getting used to playing there.

Jack: The pronunciation of ‘get used to’ can be difficult. We don’t pronounce the ‘-ed’ part of the word ‘used’. Listen to the sentences as I say them slowly and then more naturally.

West Ham are getting used to their new stadium.

West Ham are getting used to their new stadium.

West Ham are getting used to their new stadium.

Rich: The phrase becomes /ju:stə/ rather than /juːst tuː/. So listen again as I say a phrase slowly and then again more naturally.

I’ve got used to siestas on hot Sunday afternoons!

I’ve got used to siestas on hot Sunday afternoons!

I’ve got used to siestas on hot Sunday afternoons!

Jack: This pronunciation really isn’t that tricky... once you’re used to it!

Football Phrase

Rich: It’s time for this week’s football phrase, Jack.

Jack: Last week’s football phrase was goal celebration. Lots of you got it right last week, but special congratulations to Liubomyr from Ukraine.

Rich: Well done Liubomyr. You were the first person to get the answer right!

Jack: The football phrase this week is ***-*** ****. The phrase means a match that finishes without any goals. When we aren’t talking about football we usually use the word zero but we don’t usually say three - zero or four - zero in football we use another word. The match between Leicester City and Arsenal last weekend finished in a ***-*** ****.

Rich: Yes, it wasn’t the most exciting of matches but at least both teams have their first points of the season.

Prediction

Jack: As we’ve just been speaking about the Leicester City - Arsenal match it’s a good time for us to talk about last week’s prediction. You did well again Rich, you predicted the right result - a draw, but not the right score - you predicted a 1-1 draw. So, that’s one point for you.

Rich: Most of our Premier Skills listeners also predicted a 1-1 draw so that’s a point for all of you. But, you predicted an Arsenal win so nothing for you, Jack.

Jack: No, maybe this week. Which match are you going to talk about?

Rich: One of the four 100% Premier League records is going to go this weekend because Hull City face Manchester Utd. Both teams have won their opening two matches. Hull have surprised Leicester and Swansea and Manchester Utd have beaten Southampton and Bournemouth. Hull have home advantage but I think we will see Utd continue their good form. I’m going for a final score of Hull City 0-3 Manchester Utd.

Jack: Manchester Utd will probably win but I’m going to go for a draw with a last minute equaliser for Hull. I think it’ll be 1-1.

Rich: You’ve heard what Jack and I think now make your predictions in the vote at the bottom of this page.

Jack: Right, well,  that’s all we have time for today!

Rich: Don’t forget to write your answers to our questions the football phrase and your predictions in the comments below. And remember to  take a look at our Fantasy Football section and join in the discussions!

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football!

People should get used to all different accents as in France if you live in South or North, they could have some difficulties to understand everyone...

It's quite difficult to get used to playing at new stadium. As you had a lot of habits and routines in the previous one.

Hi Davilillons

Your answers are good - there's not a lot to correct.

1. Yes,I do because it's an unusual venue for everyone, players, managers, spectators and so on, and they need time to get used to its.

I'm not sure that unusual is quite right here. I think it would be better to say new - unusual makes it sound like it's strange in some way, like for example if they were playing in a swimming pool or supermarket. Also, it not its, but I think that was a typo.

2. When I moved of house I get used to living without my parents and be far them

We say 'move out of home' - so, when I moved out of home...

This is in the past so 'got used to... though I would have probably written: I had to get used to living without my parents.

Get used to is followed by a noun; a thing or a gerund - verb+ing. Get used to living... and being far from them.

Also, no full stop.

3. To live in Spain you get used to the politician stole you in your face and you can't do nothing

I think that people feel that way about politicians everywhere smiley.

Again, get used to should be followed by a gerund: get used to politicians stealing... also, we say steal from someone.

The end of your sentence has a double negative. This is actually used in some forms of English - you hear it in colloquial American English and some UK slang. However, unless you are clearly using slang, you should probably say: you can't do anything.

4. Neither look for in Google I don't say you other club. I'm sorry

Don't worry about it. I couldn't tell you without looking either.

I think that it would be better to say I can't tell you the other clubs. We spoke about this in the podcast last week.

Thanks

Jack - The Premier Skills English Team

A goalless draw does describe a draw with no goals but this isn't the phrase we're looking for!

Hi Elghoul

Yes, I imagine it's difficult to get used to playing at a much bigger stadium. I don't think Man United have played Premier League home matches at two different grounds. Does anybody else want to guess?

New premier league players are most likely to get to used to the style of play after about a month.

I'd have to get used to cloudy, unstable weather and usually cold seas in the UK.

Yes, I'd like to visit the Agatha Christie Festival. Also I'd like to swim across the English Channel but the sea is too cold there - maximum + 16 in August. To this you can add the constant bothering side flow. :-)

It's a long way to swim. Even if you managed to swim in the right direction and not get washed into the North Sea, you'd have lots of boats to avoid. It's a very busy stretch of water - not my idea of fun.

Do you do long distance swimming?

I know about difficulties. That's why I stay home. :-) I just like breast-stroke swimming and can swim for 5-7 km without stopping. With some training I think I could have a try. There was a Ukkainian who some ten years ago did this deed. He was just a brother of a professional swimmer who gave him some training. He payed a needed sum and crossed the Strait.

That's pretty good. I haven't swum in a long time - I doubt I could manage very far.

If people came to live in Ukraine they would have to get used to poor, run-down roads, political instability, and a lot of lies from the government.
