Getting Angry 16/17 ep.11

In this week's Premier Skills English podcast, Rich talks about half and half football scarves and why they make him angry. Jack tries to calm him down. The language focus is on expressions we use when we are angry and expressions we use to calm people down. We also have news about our Premier Skills Fantasy Football team, a new football phrase for you to guess and a Premier League prediction for you to make in our weekly vote. Enjoy!

Vocabulary

In the podcast, Rich and Jack used some words and phrases that might be new for you. You can see two examples here:

There were a few more tricky words in the podcast. Can you remember all of them? Try the activity below, then, listen to the podcast again to hear how we used the words in context. This can really help with understanding.

Language

In this week's podcast, Rich got a bit angry about half and half scarves (note: scarf when singular but scarves when plural). He really doesn't like half and half scarves. You can see this when he said:

These scarves. They are horrible. I can't stand them!

When we say that we can't stand something it means you really, really don't like or hate something or someone. You could say:

I can't stand waiting. It's so boring!

I can't stand broccoli. It's disgusting!

We can use a noun (broccoli) or a verb (wait) after the phrase 'can't stand'. When we use a verb, we use the gerund form of the verb (-ing). We say:

I can't stand cheating. I think players who cheat should get a red card.

Other verbs that are used to describe feelings or preferences are also followed by the gerund form. For example; love, enjoy, hate, like and dislike.

I hate watching films but I love watching football!

In this activity, think about how we can use the gerund (-ing form) in English.

Activity 2: In this activity, decide which situation each sentence belongs to and put it into the correct group.

When do we the gerund?

We use the gerund in the following situations:

1. like a noun as the subject or object of a sentence

Swimming is an excellent way of taking exercise.

2. after prepositions:

I'll think about getting a season ticket next year.

3. After certain verbs, e.g. avoid, enjoy, finish, go, imagine, mind, risk, suggest

I always enjoy relaxing on the sofa to watch the match

Vocabulary

'Can't stand' is one phrase that we often use to show that we are angry but there were others that Rich used in the podcast. A couple of examples were:

Look at this! Chelsea on one half and Leicester on the other. It's just plain wrong!
Come on!
Look! I have a programme here! It says on the front - Chelsea v Leicester November 15th 2016.

It's not only the words that show that you are angry; we use our voice, too. The phrases are written with exclamation marks because Rich was angry and raised his voice (he was shouting). We also use our voice if we want to calm someone down. Look at this sentence from the podcast:

It's OK Rich, you're still ranting. You can calm down now.

Here Jack's voice is reassuring which makes Rich feel less worried and less angry about things. The phrases 'calm down' and 'it's OK' are probably less important than the way he says them. However, the words are also important and in this next activity, we'd like you to look at some words and phrases that are either used when you are angry or when you are trying to calm someone down.

Rich: and welcome to this week’s Premier Skills English podcastJack: Where we talk about football and help you with your English.

Jack: Let’s start with what’s been happening on the website this week.

Rich: We’ve got a new article all about Manchester City on the website. They’ve had a fantastic season. They’ve won the League and Cup double and won 6-0 in the Champions League?

Jack: Err.. what are you talking about, Rich? We’re in October - are you in some kind of parallel universe?

Rich: No, I’m right here, Jack. I’m talking about Man City’s women’s team. It’s an exciting time for women’s football in the UK with crowds and interest increasing all the time. So, take a look at the article - it’s on the homepage and also includes this week’s Football English Quiz.

Jack: Alex from Ukraine has already told us that Zhilstroy Kharkiv won the Ukranian women’s cup just last week which made him happy because Kharkiv is his home town.

Rich: We ask you what you know about women’s football in your country in the article so let us know. In last week’s podcast, we were talking about differences between American and British English.

Jack: Most of you said that you weren’t sure if you used British or American English apart from Kwesimanifest from Ghana who is sure that he uses British English.

Rich: Many of you spoke about your own languages, too. Elghoul from Algeria said he spoke Arabic but his Arabic is different from Arabic spoken in Egypt or Tunisia for example.

Jack: Poui from Laos says that pronunciation can make Lao very difficult to understand and Emil from Russia thinks Russian is also a very difficult language for foreigners to learn.

Rich: And Aragorn1986 from Montenegro made an interesting point about his language - Montenegrin. He said it’s similar to other languages in the region but just named differently for national reasons.

Language

Jack: So, Rich got a little bit angry about something in the last section. When we get angry about a topic we can say that we rant about it or we can go on a rant. It means to talk about something for a long time in an angry way. Rich was ranting about half and half football scarves.

Rich: And in this section we’re going to take a look at some of the language Rich used and language more generally we use to show that we are angry.

Jack: Let’s start with some vocabulary. Rich said that he ‘can’t stand’ half and half scarves. If you can’t stand something it means you hate something.

Rich: It’s true. I can’t stand half and half scarves. Buy two scarves if you want, one for each team but not half and half - it’s just wrong.

Jack: OK, Rich you’re still ranting - you can calm down now, there are no half and half scarves nearby.

Rich: OK, sorry.

Jack: Rich just said ‘it’s just wrong’ this is another phrase that is used to show anger. Earlier outside the football stadium he said ‘it’s plain wrong’ and this phrase is used in a similar way - to say that something should not happen or be done in a particular way.

Rich: When I used the expression ‘come on’ it was to show surprise and a little anger when Jack said someone could support both teams.

Jack: A lot of anger is in the voice and not the words. You could tell Rich was a little angry when he said ‘these’ and ‘look’ and ‘good’. He said the words quickly and his voice was louder. He would normally use more words to be more polite. Have a listen again and think about how you can tell he is angry.

Rich: In the comments section below, we would like you to think about something that make you angry - in and out of football. Rant about them a little explaining why they make you angry.

Jack: Use lots of exclamations and phrases to show that you are angry! But please try not to swear!

Football Phrase

Rich: Have you got a football phrase for us this week?

Jack: Yes, I have, but first last week’s football phrase. The phrase was ‘extra-time’. This in American English is called ‘over-time’. A few of you said ‘injury time’. This is the two or three minutes that are added at the end of the first half or the end of the game because of injuries or time wasting. We don’t see ‘extra-time’ in the Premier League - only in cup matches and it lasts for thirty minutes.

Rich: Well done to Emil from Russia, Poui from Laos, Liubomyr and Alex from Ukraine, Aragorn1986 from Montenegro and Kwesimanifest from Ghana. You all got the right answer!

Jack: I’ve gone for a really difficult phrase this week. Let’s see how you do. The phrase is * *** *** ** *** ******. The phrase is usually used by managers after a bad result. The final word in this phrase or cliche is a place where someone often works when they use a computer, and in this phrase it means work. So, when a manager uses this phrase he is saying that the team has had a poor day at work.

Rich: Pretty difficult. Let’s see if anybody can guess the right answer.

Prediction

Jack: Last week’s prediction was on the Liverpool-Man Utd match but because we’re recording this on Monday afternoon we don’t know the result yet.

Rich: Let’s just say Liverpool won 4-0.

Jack: No, let’s not - you don’t want to get egg on your face. If you are listening after the match we will have changed the prediction league on the page so you can take a look. Right Rich, this week’s prediction.

Rich: This weekend’s big match features an away trip for Manchester Utd for the second week in a row. And, it’s another difficult match for the Red Devils because they are away to Chelsea. The big story around this match is, of course, Jose Mourinho’s return to the club where he was so successful for so many years. I have no idea how this will affect him but I’m sure he will want his new players to show his ex-players what they can do. I think it will be a close game with few goals but I think Jose will finish the game with a smile on his face. Final score: Chelsea 0-1 Manchester Utd

Jack: I think Chelsea will win this one. I’m going to go for a 2-1 win to Chelsea with Diego Costa getting a goal.

1- I totally agree with Rich. Half scarves aren’t wrong but unlikeable, Football means competion,race,to be supporter of a team.I’m fan of more than one teams but in the different countries like Tottenham (U.K) Juventus (Italy) BJK (Turkey) All of them have black and white kit-:)
Supporting more than one teams in the same league doesn’t make sense. Half and half football scarves are useful and economical when family members are fan of different teams. It prevents clashes in he home-:)
2-Football matches which played “slow-motion” without goal positions and attacks make me angry. It’s waste of time.
3- Being blamed for a financial damage which I’m not responsible. That’s make me angry.
I can’t stand people who have bad breath.
I can’t stand waiting in the shop when someones are shopping except my wife-:)

WOMEN’S FOTBALL IN TURKEY
Women’s fotball officially got started in 1994 under supervising of (TFF) Turkish Footbal Federation in Turkey . There are three leagues and (36) teams. Champion of first division represent our country in UEFA matches every year. Due to Covid-19 these leagues are suspended and haven’t started yet. Women’s football isn’t as popular as men’s football here.

ABOUT LANGUAGES
Changes in the cultural , historical and geographical fields also changes vocabulary and use of language. I visited Uzbekistan for a along time ago. Although our languages are orginated and classified in the same group, I wasn’t able to communicate with them easily. Because they speak dialects.

PHRASES
I immediately go away when someones start to rant about politics.

Manager of our company has announced cut off quarterly bonuses in order to reach next year’s budget targets. It’s plain wrong.

Some liar politicians deserve to get egg on their face.I never do this.In these pandemic days egg prices are rising-:)

1. I think Rich was not right to get angry about half and half scarves because It is the good way to show that you love the match and it like a friendship symbol. yes, you can support more than onw team but at least just only two or not in the same league.
2. I was very angry about football especially, when some players were cheating or dirty play on the opposite team's players. I cannot stand cheating and always have a rant with my friends after the match (especially when we support different team).
3. I cannot stand the corruption and I hated to watch good people to get hurt by bad guys.

Your answers to questions two and three are excellent and it's great that you have used the language from the podcast in your answers. The only correction I'd like to make is when you say 'I hate to watch' in question 3. When we use verbs like hat, love, like we use the gerund (-ing form) so we should say: 'I hate watching'.

Your answer to question one was a little bit more difficult to understand. I've made some corrections below. Let me know if there is anything you don't understand.

I don't think Rich was ~~not~~ right to get angry about half and half scarves because it is ~~the~~ a good way to show that you love the ~~match~~ game and it is like a ~~friendship symbol~~ symbol of friendship. Yes, you can support more than one team but ~~at least just only two~~ only two at the most or ~~and~~ not in the same league.

I don't like half and half scarves also. I don't see the point of it. Sometimes I'm angry when I see it's already injury time and the manager is preparing a new substitute. It's never done for the reason they want to make a change but only to spent some precious time. It should be banned after 90'. Outside of football I can't stand expensive tickets. Do rich fans deserve more tickets than those who are standing in lines for hours to support their favourite team? I'm sure the most of you will agree with me. Because you love football and promote this wonderful game.

Yes, I find these last-minute substitutions really annoying, too! I think that would be a great rule to introduce but managers are sure to say that their substitutions are tactical or a player is injured rather than to waste time!

1.When there is hatred in the stadium air it is worthy to higher a half and half scarf.
2.I don't like hatred in stadiums and when we see as those years people hurting each others with stones and even long knifes before and after a match it is really awful and terrible.
3.I can't stand looking fans hitting referees with any sorts of objects although the players haven't yet begun harming up.

With the player of the week i think De Gea would give Maarten Stekelenburg a good match.
I afree that as of the time of broadcasting the podcast Maarten Stekelenburgwas the player of the week. However after the Liverpool vrs United match De Gea is the best player this week.

I do not think Rich was right to get angry about half and half scarves. In Khar'kov one usually buys them not to support more than one team. They were sold when Metallist played international matches - as a souvenir of the game. I used to have such half and half scarves with colours of, say, Sampdoria and Everton, though I am not their supporter. :-)
