Learner Autonomy

Learner Autonomy

Learner autonomy is a term which is sometimes misused and often misunderstood. When we say learner autonomy, do we mean self-study? Or do we mean something else? And why is it so important, why does it matter? Is learner autonomy something a teacher can help foster in the classroom, or is tt something only the learner can influence?

This workshop will look at learner autonomy in the context of English language learning. We will discuss definitions, and its importance, before considering ways in which a teacher can help learners reach this ‘goal’ of increased autonomy, in the context of motivating materials from the Premier Skills English website.

Learner Autonomy Workshop

The following activities on the topic of motivation are intended to help you think about what you learnt from the video.

Activity 1: In this activity, you will see 7 statements about learner autonomy. There are gaps in each of the statements. The words from the statements are at the top of the activity. Drag the correct words to fill the gaps and complete the sentences.
Fill in the gaps in the sentences about learner autonomy.

Activity 2: In this next activity, there are 20 examples of teaching practice that exemplify one of five strategies for promoting learner autonomy. Can you match the practices with the strategy?

It's helpful to raise awareness to teachers and thus they will transfer this autonomy to their students in the future so I think it's vital for each teacher and student to have their autonomy and decide by themselves how they could learn different stuff.

Learner autonomy is important in the English language classroom because it helps the student take responsibility of his learning guarded by his teacher.

I have learnt that Autonomy is not simply a matter of putting learners in situations where they have to be independent .
