Lucas and some new friends

Sport and Inclusion

Sport and Inclusion

In this issue, the team from Monte Verde are joined for training by some children with disabilities.
Lucas gets injured and has to sit out of training for a while. He sits around the house moping about his leg hurting and not be able to play. His aunt, who works at a special education centre for children whose parents can’t afford for them to go to a private school for children with disabilities, gets sick him acting like that and tells him tomorrow he’s going to work with her to see what some kids who are really suffering because they can’t use their legs. Lucas looks totally disinterested (what a waste of time)

The next day Lucas goes with his aunt to the centre - it’s the first time he’s been out of the house since his injury and we see him struggle to make his way down the steep steps from his house, hop up the steps on the bus and back down again then navigate his way through the rush hour crowds of people on the streets. When they arrive at the education centre, his aunt heads straight to the kitchen to start work. She tells Lucas to make friends and leaves him. We can see that he is very apprehensive. He looks around the centre and sees children and teenagers with different physical disabilities. He notices that one of the kids in a wheelchair is wearing the same football shirt as him. They catch each other’s eye and start chatting about football. The boy, Paulo, says that he scored a goal in the last match. Lucas wonders (silently) how Paulo can play football in a wheelchair. Paulo realises and laughs, telling Lucas that he bets he’s way faster than him! They both laugh.

Discussion

At the beginning of the story, Lucas has some problems getting to the eductional centre by public transport. What problems can people with disabilities have when trying to get from one place to another?

Activity 1: People with disabilities can often have problems getting from one place to another, especially if they don't have their own transport. In this activity, match the barriers or obstacles they face with one possible solution to help people with disabilities.
Can you match the obstacle to a solution?

A few weeks later. Lucas’ leg has healed and he returns to training. Everyone welcomes him back. Lucas tells them that he visited the educational centre with his aunt and about the kids he met there. He wants to invite them to train with the team. Gustavo thinks its a great idea and says he’ll get in touch with the centre. Everyone else supports the idea, except Filipe who is disgusted at the idea of kids with disabilities playing with them (what’s the point? they can’t play, we need to train for the big match, etc.). Bruno agrees with him.

Language - Refusing

During the story, Filipe refuses to play with the kids from the educational centre. He uses different phrases to refuse to do something. For example:

"What's the point!?"

"You can count me out!"

Have a go at the activity below to learn more phrases to refuse to do something and also to accept doing something.

Activity 2: In the story, Filipe and Bruno responded quite negatively to working with the kids from the educational centre. In this activity, put the different phrases into the correct categories: positive, negative or neutral.
Can you put each phrase in the correct group?

When the kids from the educational centre arrive at the training ground, there are 4 of them. Two look very shy. One is on crutches and another two (including Paulo) are in wheelchairs. They each have a person to help them. The group leader from the educational centre introduces the kids and the helpers.

Orlando organises a fitness activity that involves teams competing to complete an activity course. Everyone gets really competitive and has a good time. Bruno says it looks like fun and joins in. Filipe watches from the sideline.

At one point Paulo falls over.Maria Julia and Clara look scared but Lucas just helps him back into their chair. Paulo laughs because they look more worried than he was. They keep on training and have a good time. Filipe is impressed by how well they work together.

Vocabulary

There were quite a few difficult words and phrases in this issue of the comic. For example:

"Ready to play you off the park, Lucas!"

"He can suit himself, but I’m not playing."

Have a go at the activity below and see if any of the expressions are new for you.

Activity 3: There were some difficult phrases and words in this issue of The Beautiful Game. How much did you understand?
Can you match the words to their definitions?

He asks to join in and is welcomed onto the pitch. Orlando organises a new activity and the players kids work in pairs with the kids from the educational centre.

The training session ends. The kids and assistants are happy but tired. They leave and everyone says goodbye. The team tells Orlando that it was a great training session. We learnt a lot about teamwork.

Because he thought that it would be easy or even annoying to play with people with disabilities.
The government looks like it reallys doesn't care enough about people with disabilities. Our streets are unsaitable, we have an old system of public transports and even to get a job offer or opportunity is dificult.
Sports can helps like it does with everyone else, with or without disabilities: brings an opportunity to maintain a healthy life style, to make friends, to keep away from drugs or violence, etc.

He didn't find it useful also because of the important cup match that they have after a couple of weeks.People with disabilities in my country have many difficulties that I don't know where to start.Nothing in this direction has been done from the authorities.Even the spaces reservated for the disabilities in most of the cases, are occupied by the other people. In other cases, this category of people doesn't even get the very minimum, what legally belongs to them, the disability pension...It's so sad...Sometimes I feel so ashamed about myself for being part of such society and for the inability for doing something.they are praying for only one thing, the disability pension and this is the only thing that they demand. To talk about sport in my country, helping this category of people, sounds weird to me,when the authorities tasked with the liability to do what legally belongs to them don't do it.In my country I would even go to say that sport can't even help itself...

Felipe didn't want to play at first because people with disabilities can't play and that it will be embarassing.
In Algeria they cannot have access to a lot of transport means and in my specifique town they cannot use wheelchairs because they are not good sidewalks.
We have a great number of World Champions who are helped by the State. One of them is very ill. His name is Alleg.

Felipe didn't want to play at first because he is new with his disability.
In my country people have difficulties with their disabilities because there is a lack of means or facilities helping them to entertain or work.
The Public Authority try to do their best for helping them practise sport .
