Can Defoe pull Sunderland out of danger?
Jermain Defoe scored a hat-trick with just three shots to give Sunderland a 4-2 victory against Swansea City in Wales. Sunderland took the lead after only 3 minutes, when Defoe took advantage of a mistake by the Swansea goalkeeper, Lukasz Fabianski. But, Swansea equalised after 21 minutes from the penalty spot, Icelandic international, Gylfi Sigurdsson, getting the goal. Swansea were then reduced to 10 men after Kyle Naughton was controversially sent off. However, with just 10 men, Swansea took the lead when Ghanaian international and top scorer at this year's Africa Cup of Nations, Andre Ayew, scored. The second half was a different story. Sunderland equalised through Dutch defender, Patrick van Aanholt, and then Defoe scored two more to get his fourth Premier League hat-trick and 134th Premier League goal. It was Defoe's fifth goal in his last two Premier League matches. Sunderland's second consecutive win leaves the Black Cats in 18th place and only one point and one place behind Swansea City and safety. Can Sunderland escape from relegation again this season?
"An important hat-trick and an unbelievable win." Jermain Defoe.
Who is Jermain Defoe?
Jermain Defoe was born on 7 October 1982 in London. Defoe has played for five different Premier League clubs. He started his career at West Ham but before he made his Premier League debut, he was sent out on loan to Bournemouth, who were then playing in League One, the third level of English football. He scored in ten consecutive matches for the Cherries, a club record and the following season (2001/02) he started playing in the West Ham first-team and finished the season as top scorer for the Hammers. In 2004, Defoe moved to Tottenham Hotspur, where he made his name. He scored 90 Premier League goals for Spurs in two spells at the club. His Spurs career was split by a spell with Portsmouth in 2009, who won the FA Cup that season. Unfortunately, Defoe was cup-tied and could not play, he actually missed two cup finals because Spurs won the League Cup that season. Defoe still hasn't won a major club honour. In 2010, Defoe returned to Spurs and stayed until he moved to Canada to play for Toronto in 2014. After a year in Canada, Defoe returned to the Premier League, in a £6 million deal, to play for Sunderland.
"The clinical Mr. Defoe has won us another game." Sam Allardyce, Sunderland's manager.
How many players are in the 100 goal club?
Jermaine Defoe's fifth goal in just two Premier League games took his Premier League total to 134. Defoe is part of an exclusive club of Premier League goalscorers. There is only one other current Premier League player that has over 100 Premier League goals. Can you guess who it is? Yes, it's Manchester Utd's Wayne Rooney (190). In fact, only 24 players have scored over 100 goals in the Premier League. Without Googling the answer: How many of these players can you name? If you score 134 goals, you should be one of the best all-time Premier League strikers :) I like the way Jermain is playing - on the edge. Just like he did in Wales last weekend. All of his goals came out of an inch-away-from-offside position.

The same offside-related issue came out with a late equaliser by John Terry in a 3-3 thrilling draw against Everton at Stamford Bridge. The officials must somehow handle it to improve the refereeing without damaging the pace of the game.

Sunderland is not in a desperate position but I doubt they are capable to win more points than Swansea,Newcastle or Norwich. When Defoe is not inspired they usually don't score. We'll see what Sam can do in this second half of the season.

The bottom three clubs; Aston Villa, Newcastle and Sunderland all had great results this week. Villa got their first win since the first day of the season, Newcastle got a great 3-3 draw against Man Utd and Sunderland won 4-2 at Swansea. I think the battle at the bottom will be just as exciting as the race at the top this season. What do you think?
