The term 'woodwork' is used for the whole frame of the goal, so the ball could hit either post or the crossbar and the commentator could say 'woodwork'. I suppose the frame of the goal used to be made of wood, but I'm pretty sure that this hasn't been the case for some time. We don't really say 'goal' when the ball hits the post or the crossbar - however, we can say the goalkeeper plays 'in goal'.
