Matchweek 13 - Once in a blue moon

Welcome to This Week from Premier Skills English, a weekly review of football action for learners of English from across the globe. In This Week, Jack and Rich talk about the latest action from the Premier League. They keep you up to date with our prediction competition and have lots of football English for you to learn.

Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our weekly round-up section called ‘This Week’ on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. That’s right. We’re going to discuss all the latest football action from last weekend in the Premier League.

Rich: And not only that, we’ve also got lots of interesting words and phrases to help you talk about football in English.

Jack: And we want you to use and practise these phrases by interacting with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Rich: You can find all our latest content on the Premier Skills English homepage or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page.

Jack: Let’s start with this week’s headlines!

Headlines

Rich: Spurs give Chelsea the blues.

Jack: Tottenham ended Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season with a deserved 3-1 win at Wembley. Goals from Dele Alli, Harry Kane and a brilliant individual goal from Son Heung Min gave Spurs all three points and lifted them above their London rivals in the Premier League table.

Rich: Manchester City turn on the style at West Ham.

Jack: Other fans must be green with envy as they see City dominate at the top of the Premier League. This week it was West Ham’s turn to see how good the team from Manchester are playing. Goals from David Silva, Raheem Sterling and a Leroy Sane double was enough as they cruised to a 4-0 away win.

Rich: Terriers off the bottom.

Jack: Huddersfield moved from last place to 14th with a 2-0 win at Wolves. Huddersfield only win at Wolves once in a blue moon - their last win there was in 1938! Aaron Mooy’s double gave Huddersfield the win.

Rich: Huddersfield’s manager, David Wagner, must be tickled pink with that result!

Jack: I’m sure he is very, very happy.

Vocabulary alert!

Rich: In our vocabulary alert, we look at some football English that we used in this week’s headlines.

Jack: We have eight words and phrases this week and they are all idioms that use colours. The idioms are: to give someone the blues, to be green with envy, once in a blue moon, to be tickled pink, to see red, out of the blue, a grey area and a black and white subject.

Rich: Let’s start with to give someone the blues. The blues are a feeling of sadness or unhappiness so to give someone the blues is to make someone unhappy.

Jack: That is why we said Tottenham give Chelsea the blues - because Chelsea fans ware probably sad or unhappy about the result.

Rich: The next is to be green with envy. We said that many football fans are probably green with envy about how Manchester City are playing this season.

Jack: To be green with envy means to be jealous. We would like our teams to be playing like Manchester City, too!

Rich: We said that Huddersfield only win at Wolves once in a blue moon. This idiom describes something that happens very rarely. They haven’t won there since 1938!

Jack: Let’s look at a couple more idioms with colour.

Rich: Leicester were losing 1-0 at Brighton when James Maddison saw red for the away team.

Jack: To see red means to be sent off - to get a red card. This idiom has a more general meaning too, which is to become angry. I imagine his manager saw red in the dressing room later.

Rich: Maybe not. Out of the blue with just a few minutes left, Jamie Vardy got an equaliser for Leicester.

Jack: If something happens out of the blue it means it was unexpected - nobody thought it would happen. Leicester only had 10 men and they scored out of the blue.

Rich: Let’s look at a couple more. In Manchester Utd’s 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace, both teams had goals disallowed.

Jack: I wasn’t sure. I think they should have been given.

Rich: Mmm.. all this pushing in the penalty area is a bit of a grey area. Should there be more penalties or not.

Jack: When we start using VAR it will all be more black and white.

Rich: A grey area is a situation that is not clear or where the rules are not known.

Jack: Something that is black and white is the opposite. It’s an issue that is easy to understand and is very clear what is right or wrong.

Football Awards

Rich: Right, every week, we give out three Matchweek awards.

Jack: The awards are Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Goal of the Week.

Rich: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices.

Jack: Let’s start with Player of the Week. Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane were excellent for Manchester City, Alexsandr Mitrovic scored twice for Fulham and Crystal Palace’s goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey made some great saves against Manchester United.

Rich: But our Player of the Week is Huddersfield Town’s Aaron Mooy. The first Huddersfield player to score twice in a match since he did it last - in December last year!

Jack: Now, Team of the Week. Good wins for Huddersfield, Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Everton and Fulham but our Team of the Week is Tottenham Hotspur.

Rich: We could have gone for City again but Tottenham played very well to end Chelsea’s unbeaten start tot he season.

Jack: Finally Goal of the Week. Two quality goals from our Player of the Week Aaron Mooy, the way Leroy Sane went past West Ham defenders was brilliant but our Goal of the Week goes to Tottenham’s Son Heung Min. He ran from the halfway line, cut inside and curled the ball home. Fantastic stuff.

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Every week, Rich predicts the result of one Premier League match and we want you to make your prediction, too.

Rich: Lots of you made predictions last time but most of you went for a Chelsea win against Spurs.

Jack: Let’s see how you all do this week. What match are you looking at, Rich?

Rich: There are two big derbies this weekend. The Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton and the North London Derby between Arsenal and Spurs. I’m going to predict the latter. Spurs will be buzzing after that result and performance against Chelsea but Arsenal are doing well, too. The Gunners are much harder to beat this season and only Manchester City have scored more goals than them this season. I think it will be tight and I’m going to sit on the fence in this one. Final score: Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham.

Jack: I think Arsenal will have something to sing about after this match. I think we’ll win 2-1.

Rich: We will see. Make your predictions on the page below. You get one point if you predict the right result and three points if you predict the right score.

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this football round-up. Join the discussion at the bottom of the page.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

o Player scored a goal with a hesitation of "off-side" but goal is allowed and he was tickled pink with this desicion.

 In 2010 season, Turkish “Super League” team Bursaspor, became champion once in a blue moon .This team was only one time champion in history of league.

o I made bet with my friends unfortunately they generally give me the blues.

 When she got promotion some of her colleagues were green with envy.

 It must be nightmare for players to see red.

 At the corner kick defender scored with a header out of blues last minutes.

 It was a little bit of grey whether it’s penalty or off-side. After checking on V.A.R. penalty desicion cancelled.

 Although position is black and white players generally argue with referee about it.

Wonderful games this week especialy Totenham against Chelsea, despite I expect the spurs win the derby I didn't expect a good result such 3-1.

Manchister City Attack was lethal and they didn't give their oppenent the chance to build the play, Liverpool fans are tickled pink because their team is still chasing the leader.

Very good week for Spurs beating Chelsea at Wembley stadium. A special mention of course for Song Heung Min's goal which I was happy to watch onlive. Someone else who have seen him choosing to finish the action putting the ball in the back of the net would have liked him to pass the ball to Harry Kane but not me. His kick was straight after beating one player and getting in the box between three opposite players around him. He was like Huddersfield once in his blue moon after missing lots of matches.

He should be tickled pink if he watched himself in the highlights on tv.
