Football Shout-out: Goals

Football Shout-out: Goals

Welcome to Football Shout-out from Premier Skills English, where we talk about the language you need when watching a match. Whether you are a super fan or an armchair fan you won't be able to avoid football on TV this summer. In Football Shout-out, Jack and Rich present useful language to shout at the TV screen when watching a match with or without friends! In this episode, they look at the language you need when your team scores a goal.

Transcript

If the listening was a bit difficult, you can listen and read the transcript at the same time.
Read the transcript and listen at the same time.

Jack: Hello and welcome to Premier Skills English - Football Shout-out

Rich: Football Shout-out is the series that teaches you the language you need when you’re watching the game.

Jack: Hi everybody my name’s Jack

Rich: and my name’s Rich and welcome to our new series of football English podcasts where we talk about the English you need when you’re watching football.

Jack: Everyone is really excited about all the football that’s coming up, so we’re here to help you with some essential football English.

Rich: That’s right. Whether you’re a super fan or you just watch sometimes, you won’t be able to avoid the football on TV over the next few weeks.

Jack: So in this series of podcasts, we’re going to talk about what to say, shout or scream when watching a match.

Rich: If you listen to our lessons, you’re going to sound like a real football expert in English. This is our first lesson and we’re going to start by talking about goals. What do you say when your team scores a goal?

Jack: Listen to this:

Jack: Come on ...

Rich: Shoot ...

Jack: Take a shot...

Jack: Yeah!

Rich: Woohoo!

Jack: Get in!

Rich: Come on!

Jack: What a goal!

Rich: What a belter.

Jack: What a great time to score.

Rich: We can get back in this.

Jack: It’s a great feeling.

Rich: Yeah - there’s nothing better.

Jack: So the language: Get in and come on are probably the most common phrases.

Rich: But you don’t say them like that - it’s probably much more like get in! and come on!

Jack: I always thought we used ‘come on’ more to encourage a team.

Rich: You’re right! Fans will shout or chant, yes chant is a better word something like ‘come on England, come on England’.

Jack: Unless you’re a fan of Colombia or Senegal.

Rich: Very good. Anyway, ‘come on’ can be used for encouragement and as an expression of happiness just like ‘get in’.

Jack: OK, but that’s probably just the first reaction as well as cheering and jumping up and down of course, but then you might describe the goal and say something like ‘What a goal!’ if it was a good goal or ‘what a belter!’

Rich: A belter?

Jack: Yeah. It means an incredible or fantastic goal. You could say screamer too If it was a powerful shot. That’s an absolute screamer! Or ‘a cracker’ if it was really good.

Rich: And here you might add something like: he gave the goalkeeper absolutely no chance which means the goalkeeper couldn’t possibly save it.

Jack: I suppose you start with a natural reaction like get in and then you describe the goal and say something like ‘what a goal!’.

Rich: Then you might talk about it a bit more and talk about the context of the match and what the goal means. You probably calm down a bit and say something like: that’s a brilliant time to score - just before half-time or I think we can get back into this now or I think we’re going to win this.

Jack: Listen again.

Jack: Come on ...

Rich: Shoot ...

Jack: Take a shot ..

Jack: Yeah!

Rich: Woo hoo!

Jack: Get in!

Rich: Come on!

Jack: What a goal!

Rich: What a belter.

Jack: What a great time to score.

Rich: We can get back in this.

Jack: So, that’s how you celebrate and talk about a goal in English. But what about when our team concedes a goal.

Rich: I don’t think we should talk about that, should we?

Jack: Haha, you’re probably right.

Rich: We’ve got some activities to help you remember the phrases that we’ve been speaking about in the lesson below this podcast.

Jack: We’ll be back soon with our next football English lesson, which will be about what to say when a player is fouled.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

Language

The language you need when your team scores a goal

In the listening, Rich and Jack split the language into three categories:

  1. Natural reactions
  2. Describing the goal
  3. The context of the match

Natural Reactions

This is what you say at the exact time of the ball hitting the back of the net. Jack and Rich used two examples:

Get in!

Come on!

These expressions are used to show that you are very happy about something happening. It's important to say them in the right way. Have a listen to the conversation again and repeat.

Describing the goal

The structure what a + noun is very common to describe goals. 'What a goal!' is the most common.

All of these examples can be used to describe goals. Which ones did Rich and Jack use in the podcast?

What a goal!

What a beauty!

What a belter!

What a pearler!

What a screamer!

What a cracker!

If it is a really, really good goal you can use the adjective absolute + noun. You could say:

That's an absolute beauty!

That's an absolute screamer!

That's an asolute pearler!

The ball is in the net!

Task

The Context

The context of a football match is always important. If your team is winning 5-0 or losing 5-0 and you score, your celebration will be very different from if your team scores a 90th-minute winner! What do you think would be the situation in the match if you heard these phrases:

  1. That's a brilliant time to score!
  2. We can get back into this now!
  3. Come on! I think we're going to win this!
  4. Get in! We can turn this around, you know!
  5. There's no way back for them now!
  6. Get in! We've broken the deadlock at last!

That's a brilliant time to score! – The end of the match is near and with this now we’re now winning.
We can get back into this now! – There’s time and now we're only one goal down.
Come on! I think we're going to win this! – Our advantage is now two goals and our play is better.
Get in! We can turn this around, you know! - We're still in a delicate situation, but there's time yet.
There's no way back for them now! – They’re lost, our advantage on the scoreboard is now too big.
Get in! We've broken the deadlock at last! - Finally a goal. I hope it's not too late.

1. That's a brilliant time to score!- 90th minute with just a minute time added on.
2. We can get back into this now!
Come on! I think we're going to win this!- Say we down by 2 goals and get a equalizer in the 78th minute.
3. Get in! We can turn this around, you know!- Say your team get an equalizer from 3 goals down.
4. There's no way back for them now! A team down by 3 goals with 2 minutes if additional time left.
5. Get in! We've broken the deadlock at last! - When a team scores after having so many attempts at goal.

Congratulations for the inauguration of this fantastic section. Yeah, Most of them were new for me although they're understandable.

I can imagine the situation when a football fan says this 'There's no way back for them now'. Maybe when his team scores a very late winner or is winning by a big margin. I really like the above phrase↑.

One more shout-out. ↓
Watch the replay. Boom......what a rocket! To be honest, I invited it.

A belter and a screamer are pretty new for me. I am not really used to watch English commentated football matches on tv.

It is a historical goal when talking about a World Cup trophy winning goal like the one of Pele in 1970.
