Son Shines for Spurs!

Tottenham Hotspur and South Korean forward, Son Heung-min, have been on a great run recently. Tottenham have won seven Premier League matches in a row for the first time and it's the first time Spurs have won seven consecutive matches in the top division since 1967 - that's 50 years ago! Son celebrates his goal against Bournemouth. With Harry Kane injured, Son Heung Min has been having the best run of his Tottenham career. Son has scored five goals in his last six Premier League matches. Tottenham's seventh win arrived last Saturday, against Bournemouth. Spurs won the match 4-0 and it could have been more. Son scored the second goal of the afternoon. It was a fine finish after a clever run into the penalty area. Spurs are now only four points behind Chelsea in the Premier League and the title race is definitely back on. But, before getting back to the Premier League, Tottenham have the small matter of a FA Cup semi-final to play - against Chelsea! Could Tottenham take the League and Cup away from Chelsea? It will be an exciting end to the season.

Son is brilliant - he needed time to adapt his game but he is now fit and healthy and he is feeling really comfortable.

Spurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino.

Who is Son Heung-min?

Son needs one more goal to become the top Korean goalscorer in English football.

Son Heung-min was born on 8 July 1992 in Chuncheon, a city in the north of South Korea. The city of around 250,000 people is surrounded by mountains and famous for its lakes and beautiful landscapes. As a child, Son played youth football for Seoul FC, whose youth teams have produced many famous South Korean footballers including Lee Chung-Yong, who currently plays for Crystal Palace. At just 16 years old, Son made a big move in his career, he signed for Hamburg in Germany's Bundesliga. After taking a couple of years to settle into life in Germany, Son made his first-team debut for Hamburg at 18 and, in total, played 78 times for the club. In the summer of 2013, Son moved to Hamburg's Bundesliga rivals, Bayer Leverkusen. He helped the team qualify for the Champions League and the following season scored five times as Leverkusen reached the round of 16. In the summer of 2015, Son made the move to England to play for Tottenham Hotspur.

It's great to win. We're really happy to win 4-0 again but we just have to keep it going.

Son Heung-Min, talking after Tottenham's 4-0 win against Bournemouth.

The most expensive player of all time!

Son Heung-Min has scored lots of goals this season.

When Son Heung-min arrived at Tottenham, he became the most expensive Asian player in football history. Here are some other big transfer deals involving Asian players:

Big transfers involving Asian players

Player Clubs Involved Cost
Son Heung-min Bayer Leverkusen (Germany) to Tottenham Hotspur (England) £22M
Hidetoshi Nakata AS Roma (Italy) to Parma (Italy) £18M
Shinji Kagawa Borussia Dortmund (Germany) to Manchester Utd (England) £16M
Shinji Okazaki Mainz (Germany) to Leicester City (England) £8M
Ki Sung-yeung Celtic (Scotland) to Swansea City (England) £7M

If at first you don't succeed......

Son hasn't missed many chances this season!

Son arrived at White Hart Lane, the home of Tottenham Hotspur, as the most expensive Asian player in football history so expectations were high. However, Son's first season at Tottenham wasn't a total success. He started only 13 Premier League matches and only scored four goals. It took time for him to settle into life in the UK and life in the Premier League. Last summer, Son asked the Spurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino, if he could leave the club. Pochetinno convinced Son to stay. The player, the manager and the fans are very happy to see his improved performances this season. In September, Son became the first player from Asia to win a Premier League Player of the Month Award and he now has 12 Premier League goals this season and 19 goals in total. No other player from Asia has scored as many goals in a single Premier League season. He is also on the verge of breaking two more records. If he scores one more goal this season, Son will become the highest scoring Asian player in Premier League history (overtaking ex-Manchester Utd Park Ju-Sung) and break the record for most goals in a single season by a Korean in European league.

I wanted to ask the manager to play more. Every player wants to play games. He has given me a chance and I am very grateful to him. I am very happy now. He was very honest with me.

Son Heung-min.

Why might Son have to leave Spurs?

Son scoring in the AFC Asian Cup in 2015 against Australia.

One thing that could stop Son achieving all his goals with Spurs is military service. Military service is time spent working in the army, navy or air force, and in South Korea it is mandatory. All men in South Korea must complete 21 months of military service before they are 28 years old. Son is now 24 years old and will have to complete military service in the next few years, which may interrupt his playing career. However, exemptions are possible. In the past, footballers have been given exemptions (official permission not to take part) if they win something with the national team. Son got to the final of the AFC Asian Cup and the quarter-finals at the Olympics in Brazil and he is an important part of the national team with 53 caps. Son will have chances to earn an exemption at the Asian Games in 2018 and the Olympics in 2020, but if South Korea don't do well in those competitions, he will be required to join up with the South Korean army.

I think some players decide to leave the Premier League because of the fast tempo of the league and the competitiveness in the positions in each team. Also , the weather conditions might be difficult for some players and the physicality of the game sometimes for players who are getting older.

1.Slimani is the most expensive Algerian player. His contract with Leicester was worth 29 millions Euros. He was born here in Algiers suburb and made his stage years at the Cheragas club until he had his debut as professional with Belcourt. His carreer gained success when he moved to Sporting Lisbon for just 600 thousands euros. He participated to the last World Cup in Rio.

I can't think Spurs will catch Chelsea in the Premier League.

Every player dreams of The Premier League. They can leave in the end of their competitive years to far away Championship like USA or China and if they are still at top for Spanish Club and less evenly France or German.

Correct me please.

The brazilian player most expensive is Neymar, he was sold to Barcelona for 88,4 millions Euro, a controversial sale.
I think that Spurs don't catch Chlesea more, mainly after FA Cup semi-final, Chelsea is excelent run in and more confidente after the win.
Some players need more time for adaptation, the culture and the way of play sometimes are very diferents. If the player don't adapt or if there is a offer like chinese or another big european team the player can decide to leave the Premier League.

Hi RafaelRC

Here are some corrections. I hope they are useful.

The brazilian player most expensive is Neymar, he was sold to Barcelona for 88,4 millions Euro, a controversial sale.
I think that Spurs don't catch Chlesea more, mainly after ^ FA Cup semi-final, Chelsea is excelent run in and more confidente after the win.
Some players need more time for adaptation, the culture and the way of play sometimes are very diferents. If the player don't adapt or if there is a offer like chinese or another big european team the player can decide to leave the Premier League.

1. Word order - The most expensive Brazilian player...

2. 'don't' is not quite right here. 'won't' would be better

3. missing word - the FA Cup

4. This is interesting. In this week's prediction, we talked about the work 'run' meaning a series of consecutive matches. So you could say: Chelsea are having an excellent run. However, you use the phrase 'run-in' which is a brilliant phrase to describe the final matches of the season. So you could also say: Chelsea are having an excellent run-in.

5. Spelling - confident

6. We need time to do something - players need more time to adapt.

7. way of playing or style of play

8. Word order and spelling - are sometimes very different

9. Wrong word - If a player can't adapt

10. Wrong word - from a Chinese or big European club

I hope these all make sense to you.

Thanks

Correct me

In football anything can happen especially in the Premier League.
Unlike the Pride of London, Spurs have a difficult looking matches to play, that's why I don't think they can catch the Blues.

Some players leave the EPL because of the Mouth-Watering offers, as we have seen an extremely huge Chinese offers which are not easy to turn down.
Another reason makes footballer to leave not only the EPL but also many leagues is when the two Spanish Giants Real Madrid and Barcelona knock the door, many players cannot say no.
Players also find it difficult to adapt with the Speed, The intensity, and the way of play in EPL.

Hi Ahmed

I agree about Spurs having a more difficult run in. But, as you say, you never know what might happen in the Premier League. I've made a few corrections below but there were not many as your answers were very clear.

In football anything can happen especially in the Premier League. Unlike the Pride of London, Spurs have a some (1) difficult looking matches to play, that's why I don't think they can catch the Blues.

Some players leave the EPL because of the mouth-watering offers, as we have seen an extremely (2) from the huge Chinese offers which are not easy to turn down. Another reason which makes footballers to leave not only the EPL but also many leagues is when the two Spanish Giants Real Madrid and Barcelona knock on the door, many players cannot say no. Players also find it difficult to adapt to with the speed, the intensity, and the style (3) of play in the EPL.

Lots of really high level vocabulary here, Ahmed! I like how you use colloquial words and phrases like 'catch', 'turn down', and 'knock on the door'. Some things to think about:

  1. We need to use 'some' here because we're talking about more than one difficult match.
  2. 'Huge' is a non-gradable adjective so you can't use adverbs like 'very' and 'extremely' to make it stonger. 'Huge' means 'extremely big'.
  3. This is a difficult one. We say 'style of play' or 'way of playing' but not 'way of play'.

Hope that helps!

The most expensive montenegrin player is Stevan Jovetic who used to play for Man.City but has been transfered to Inter and now he found his place in Sevilla. Spurs made big winning streak and the race for the title is back in the focus once again. In my opinion Tottenham and Monaco are big reveals of the season in Europe this year. Some players decided to leave PL because it's very hard to keep the stamina on the highest level all the time. You need to be in perfect shape, but also rest between the matches as much as possible so you can play every 3-4 days on professional level..Not all of them are ready for that sacrifice.

Correct me.
According to the "Transfermarkt.de" website, 3 most expensive Russian players are from CSKA Moscow. The first, Mario Fernandes, has recently got both a Russian citizenship and an opportunity to play for the Russian national team. He is considered as the best right back in the Russian Premier League (RPL). However, the national team's manager hasn't still let him play even a couple of minutes.
The second one is Alan Dzagoev. He was supposed to leave RPL after the Euro-2012 but the unexpected failure to qualify to the quaterfinals has cut the demand for him. Now he is one of the most important players in the CSKA midfield.
Finally, the third one is Igor Akinfeev. He has been the first goalkeeper in the club for approximately 14 years and in the national team for 9 years. Igor is 31 and has played all his career for CSKA from the youngest teams to the first one.

I hope that Spurs will keep being the title contenders till the last match will be left to play. Pochettino and his team deserves to win a trophy, so, I hope Spups will beat Chelsea in the FA Cup and win the final (not if Man City will be their rivals) or wil grieve Mr. Conte and Mr.Abramovich in the Premier League.

Players may leave the Premier League due to the desire to play more in the weaker leagues, either English or foreign ones. On the other hand, ae proposal from the best clubs from the other European countries can be the second reason to leave the PL.

1. missing word - the

2. the opportunity

3. word order - still hasn't

4. missing word - for (it is OK gramatically with out - it is possible to he played 2 minutes and then was sent off, but it sounds wrong in your sentence. I think it's because the emphatic 'even' demands a for). It sounds better with 'for'.

5. wrong word - for

6. These green bits are technically OK, but just sound unnatural. I think perhaps it would be better to say reduced his demand...

7. I would say: starting with the junior teams, right up to the first team. You use 'one' quite a lot and in general, this sort of reference is good, but sometimes it's not necessary.

8. This is tricky. 'Keep being' doesn't sound right - it's grammatically sound, but I think I'd say 'keep challenging for the title'.

9. I'd say: till the final match

10. I don't really understand this line.

11. lower is a bit kinder than weaker

12. You haven't stated that there are 2 reasons so you shouldn't use 'the second'. better to say 'another reason'.

Your writing really is excellent - you are very accurate. I realise that I have suggested a lot, but many of these are suggestions to make you sound more like a native speaker and not because whet you have written is wrong.

Thanks

Hi Shobonenok

Here are some corrections. I hope they are useful.

He was supposed to leave RPL after the Euro-2012 but the unexpected failure to qualify to the quarter-finals has cut the demand for him. Now, he is one of the most important players in the CSKA midfield.

Pochettino and his team deserves to win a trophy, so, I hope Spurs will beat Chelsea in the FA Cup and win the final (not if Man City will be their rivals) or will grieve Mr. Conte and Mr. Abramovich in the Premier League.

Players may leave the Premier League due to the desire to play more in the weaker leagues, either English or foreign ones. On the other hand, a proposal from the best clubs from the other European countries can be the second reason to leave the PL.

1. missing word - the

2. the opportunity

3. word order - still hasn't

4. missing word - for (it is OK gramatically with out - it is possible to he played 2 minutes and then was sent off, but it sounds wrong in your sentence.

Hi Jack

I really appreciate you for the corrections. They are very useful for me. As a current student, I don't consder the suggestions as the attempts to aggrieve me.
Let me try to rephrase the line you didn't understand: 'will make Mr. Conte and Mr. Abramovich disappointed in the Premier League'.

Hi Shobonenok

It was the vocabulary rather than the structure that was a little confusing. The most natural thing to say would probably be something like:

...disappoint Mr. Conte and Mr. Abramovich in the Premier League.

Hi Rich

Yes, this sounds much better. My English teacher often asked me not to make sentences more complicated to get them when it's possible to make them easier...
