Football Sentences Grid

Football Sentences Grid

This activity is designed to help students activate their vocabulary and actually use it in longer sentences. The activity could be used with any vocabulary, but the example grid given here is vocabulary connected with football. Once students get the idea and enjoy the game you can add in any other vocabulary next time.

Preparation

Make a copy of the grid and project it onto the board (if you don’t have a projector just make copies for groups or pairs of students).

Football Word Grid

pitch referee yellow card booking score
defender midfielder substitute manager foul
goal equaliser draw penalty shoot-out goal keeper
free kick pass volley shoot header
corner penalty box net send off linesman

Alternatively you could use the words and images from the pictures on the football phonemic charts.

You can download the Premier Skills consonants poster here.

You can download the Premier Skills vowels poster here.

Procedure

Put the students into small group or teams. Show them the word grid and ask each team to choose two words from the grid.

Try to make sure that each team chooses different words from the grid.

Next tell the students that they have to make one sentence that contains both of the word from the grid. They can change the form of the words though to the noun, verb form etc.

Give them time to write the sentence and then tell them to pass the sentence to the team on their right.

Tell the students to look at the new sentence and see if they can find any grammatical errors or any ways of improving the sentence. If they think they can make the sentence better they should rewrite it underneath.

Now tell them to once again choose two more words from the grid and again write another sentence using both words. repeat the process of exchanging sentences and editing rewriting sentences.

Once all the words have been used , collect up the papers with all the sentences on. Read the sentences out and ask the students if they are correct. Award point for correct sentences, improvements or to students who notice errors when you read out the sentences.

If you want to make the activity more difficult, you can just give out grids and get students to make sentences using all of the words, putting two or even three words into each sentence.

Over to you: Tell us what you think

What do you think of this activity?
Would it work with your students?
Can you think of a way to use it differently or make it better?
