One of the most instantly recognisable cities in England, Newcastle is home to quite possibly the Premier League’s most passionate set of fans. For Newcastle United’s fans or the ‘Toon Army’ as they are known, supporting the Magpies is something of a religion and St James’ Park is their place of worship.
Sitting majestically in the heart of the city, the stadium dominates the skyline. Just minutes from all major road and rail links, access to the ground is one of the easiest in the country.
The oldest and largest football stadium in the northeast of England, St James’ can hold over fifty-two thousand fans making it the sixth largest ground in the United Kingdom.
Some great footballing names have graced the James’ Park dressing room and as a result this famous old club enjoys a rich heritage within the sport. Eighth in the all time Premier League table, United are also the eighth most decorated club in England.
Match day, however, is when the city really comes alive. You can take a pre-match stroll to the popular Quayside or walk along the picturesque Grey Street.
if you need to show your support more expressively, head to one of the many official Newcastle United club stores en route to the ground. No pre-match ritual would be complete without a trip to Shearer’s bar and a pint of Newcastle Brown Ale.
It’s in the stadium, however, that you really begin to discover what supporting the Magpies is all about. Newcastle United is without question, the heart and soul of this city and once you’ve experienced one of their matches, you’ll know exactly why.
