Matchweek 8 - Blazed over

Matchweek 8 - Blazed over

Welcome to This Week from Premier Skills English, a weekly review of football action for learners of English from across the globe. In This Week, Jack and Rich talk about the latest action from the Premier League. They keep you up to date with our new prediction competition and have lots of football English for you to learn.

Transcript

If the listening is a bit difficult, try listening and reading at the same time.
Read the transcript and listen at the same time.

Introduction

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our weekly round-up section called ‘This Week’ on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi there. I’m Jack. That’s right. We’re going to discuss all the latest football action from Matchweek 8 in the Premier League.

Rich: And not only that, we’ve also got lots of interesting words and phrases to help you talk about football in English.

Jack: And we want you to use and practise these phrases by interacting with Premier League fans from around the world in our comments section.

Rich: You can find all our latest content on the Premier Skills English homepage or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page.

Jack: Let’s start with this week’s headlines!

Headlines

Rich: Mahrez blazes over as Liverpool and City share the spoils.

Jack: Manchester City missed the chance to win at Anfield for the first time in 15 years when Riyad Mahrez blasted an 85th-minute penalty way over the bar. In a match with few chances, the point earned keeps both teams at the top of the Premier League.

Rich: United comeback relieves the pressure at Old Trafford.

Jack: Following four games without a win Manchester United were under a lot of pressure to win this one and when they went two down after just 10 ten minutes it didn’t look good. But a magnificent second-half comeback, with an injury-time winner from Alexis Sanchez, gave United victory.

Rich: Clubs enjoying their weekend travels.

Jack: There were five away wins in the Premier League this weekend. Everton took the points against Leicester, Wolves won at Palace, Bournemouth thrashed Watford 4-0, Arsenal scored five at Fulham and Chelsea 3-0 win at Southampton took them to the top of the Premier League with City and Liverpool.

Jack: Eight games played and three teams still undefeated, all ties at the top with twenty points.

Rich: Did you know that it’s only the second time in Premier League history that three teams have been unbeaten after eight matches?

Jack: I didn’t. Nice fact.

Vocabulary alert!

Rich: In our vocabulary alert, we look at some football English that we used in this week’s headlines.

Jack: The phrases this week are all connected to missing chances.

Rich: The words and phrases are: to sky it, to balloon it over the bar, to put it over/wide, to miss a sitter, to hit it way over, it’s still rising now.

Jack: Let’s start with the easiest one, which I think is to put it wide or to put it over. This phrase means a player shoots and the ball goes to the side of the post when it is wide or the shot is too high and it goes over the crossbar. We say he’s put it wide or he’s put it over the bar!

Rich: The rest of the phrases are quite informal. To sky it is quite fun and means to hit a shot far too high over the crossbar. The ball is going into the sky rather than the goal.

Jack: He’s ballooned it over is a similar phrase but is more negative and usually describes a weak shot from near the goal that goes over the bar.

Rich: To miss a sitter means to miss a very easy chance. The opportunity is so easy that you could score when you are sitting down.

Jack: Another common phrase is ‘way over’. Riyad Mahrez hit his penalty way over the crossbar. It wasn’t even close to the crossbar.

Rich: I think his penalty is still rising now! You might hear a commentator or opposition fan say this. It means the ball is continuing to go up or to rise. If you say this, you being a little bit sarcastic.

Jack: See if you can use any of this vocabulary in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Rich: The phrases again: to sky it, to balloon it over the bar, to put it over/wide, to miss a sitter, to hit it way over, it’s still rising now.

Football Awards

Rich: Right, every week, we give out three Matchweek awards.

Jack: The awards are Player of the Week, Team of the Week and Goal of the Week.

Rich: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices.

Jack: Or, if you prefer, give a shout out to your favourite team or player.

Rich: RafaelRC from Brazil has been talking about West Ham’s Felipe Anderson. He thinks we should all keep an eye on him.

Jack: And Elghoul from Algeria was praising Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge last week for his good recent performances as a substitute.

Rich: Let’s start with this week’s Player of the Week.

Jack: Paul Pogba was at the heart of Manchester United’s comeback, Alexandre Lacazette had a great game for Arsenal, and Eden Hazard was brilliant for Chelsea once again.

Rich: But our Player of the Week is Bournemouth’s, Joshua King. Two goals in a 4-0 away win for Bournemouth and the Cherries are up to sixth place in the Premier League.

Jack: Now, Team of the Week. Bournemouth, Manchester United and Chelsea all had really good wins but our Team of the Week is Arsenal.

Rich: A 5-1 win and a ninth victory in a row for Arsenal in all competitions.

Jack: And finally our Goal of the Week. Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a brilliant long-range goal for Everton and Alexandre Lacazette scored a cracker for Arsenal.

Rich: But our Goal of the Week is another Arsenal player. Aaron Ramsey’s goal was sensational. It was a fantastic team goal with fast one-touch passing and a lovely flicked finish at the end.

Jack: That’s what Arsenal are all about. Fantastic!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: Every week, Rich is going to predict the  result of one Premier League match and we want you to make your prediction, too.

Rich: Lots of you made predictions last week for the Liverpool - Manchester City match.

Jack: A few of you predicted a draw but nobody predicted a goalless one. I think we were all a bit surprised.

Rich: There is an international break this week so we have to wait until the weekend of the 20th and 21st of October for the next round of Premier League matches.

Jack: Which match are you going to predict?

Rich: It’s Chelsea v Manchester Utd. Jose Mourinho returns to his old club once again and Chelsea will be trying to stay at the top of the Premier League. United have been playing better away than at home this season so it might be a tricky match for Chelsea. But Chelsea have, in my opinion, the player of the season so far - Eden Hazard. For that reason, I’m going to go for a Chelsea win. Final score: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United.

Jack: This match has got draw written all over it for me. I think it’ll be a one all draw.

Rich: We will see. Make your predictions on the page below. You get one point if you predict the right result and three points if you predict the right score.

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for. I hope you have enjoyed this football round-up. Join the discussion at the bottom of the page.

Rich: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

1. I haven't seen Joshua King playing yet but I'll wait until Bornemouth next matches to have a personal view on his skills.

2. Arsenal are doing well with their new manager who has been excellent in Paris St Germain.

3. Aaron Ramsay got one oustanding goal finishing a built up attack.

4. Mahrez skied the penalty kick over the bar. Lots of great players missed penalties at crucial moments.

I completely agree with the choice of Arsenal as the Team of the Week and also think Ramsey's goal was the most beautiful this week (honors to Sigurdsson's goal too). I am not sure about Joshua King as the player of the Week. Your choice is well comprehensible but I would have chosen Lacazette of Arsenal.

When it comes to missing goals I always remember of Brazilian former striker Deivid. Try to google "Deivid miss goal Santos 5 x 4 Flamengo" to see him missing an absolute sitter.

Mahrez skied the penalty last week and that reminded me of the italian player Baggio's miss penalty in the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil. He hit his penalty way over the crossbar and Brazil won its 4th World Cup.

Correct me.

1. I could also be agreed with your choice about King because Portsmouth won 4-0 and, although Watford had been playing for about 60 minutes in 10 players cause of a red card, it was absolutely surprising.
But, let me underline the marvelous skills of the Chelsea's goalkeeper who is allowed to his team playing far away from home to finish the match with a clean sheet and an impressive 0-3 win against Southampton.
As you said about excelent players like Lacazette and Hazard, if we don't look at them this time, as they always could be contending for this title, Kepa Arrizabalaga, to be honest, could be the best player of the week because he made a lot of sensational saves. The final score don't show what really happend during the match. So far Southampton didn't deserve a so widely negative result.

2. I would have chosen Arsenal like Team of the week, as you said too.

3. Of course I saw the Ramsey's goal, but in my opinion Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson scored more a brilliant goal rather than Arsenal's player one. What a perfect bend!
Moreover, that 77th-minute mark let Everton beat to Leicester as the result was all-one until that moment.
So, I think the number 10 of Everton would deserve the award as Goal of the week because both his amazing goal helped his team to take away 3 points and he has made high-level performances, scoring 3 goals in the last 2 matches.

4. I don't remember someone skied a penalty last week on the Premier League. I am pretty sure about that.
The only one who missed a penalty was Sigurdsson, during the match against Fulham, but he shot the ball on the crossbar.

5. This week there have been several players missing clear opportunity to score, but I only remember that:

-Mata was close to the goal and unbelievably he hit the ball way over the bar when the result between Manchester Utd and Newcastle was going on 2-0 for the away team. Thank God Mourhino won the match at the end, otherwise I think it should have been a real huge problem;

-the Southampton's famous striker Danny Ings missed an absolute sitter. It was the 25th-minute of the first time, Chelsea and Southampton were drawing 0-0, when Ryan Bertrand, known as the captain in red and white shirt, crossed the ball, from the left side of the pitch to the middle of the goal area, where the Southampton's number 9 was waiting alone and without opponents, and he's skied it. What a chance thrown away!

I dont understand why Mahrez still kick the penalty, despite of the fact that he has missed lots of penalties !
I think Pep just wanted to show that his purchase was not waste of money. I believe Man City didnt need an attacking winger option while having Sane and Sterling, it could be more useful , if he had bought a defensive halfback such as Kante .

Hi Amin,

Welcome to Premier Skills English. I hope you enjoy our website!

Yes, I'm not sure why he took it either. I've read that he has one of the worst penalty records in Premier League history. It might have been better if Gabriel Jesus had taken it.

On the other hand, I think Mahrez could still be useful. It's a long season and CIty will need everyone in their squad if they want to win trophies.

Hi Amin. I also welcome you this website. Perhaps your comment on Mahrez was a bit harsh.

Hi Rich. I think it is not faithful to overstress on the penalty miss in this match. Both City and liverpool spoils it. I can point out that Ryad who is Algerian like me was the best attacker for  both teams during this match. Aguero the Man City 6 meters spot kicker has been substituted minutes before and Mahrez has been training on penalty kicks weeks before. He is not usually so bad in it, refering to Leicester two years period. Nevertheless  he had the rare occasions to score during the party. His manager was so greatful with his performance that he allowed to take the essay even if he still is in his conforting time in a team where stars are numerous and prestidious.

I remember a tie between Germany and Italy went to penalties in the quarter finals of the last European Championship. Italian striker, Zaza, skied it!

Ramos also hit a penalty way over the crossbar before Los Blancos were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the 2012 Champions League semis after a dramatic penalty shootout.

He can't miss that. It was an
absolute sitter! ... Morata

I once ballooned it over the bar!!!!!

I've so far agreed with your choices, but this time I slightly disagree, especially concerning the Team of The Week Award as I think you should've chosen Bournemouth. The cherries thrashed Watford away from home and kept a cleansheet. It must've been a perfect performance by the Southwest side.

I guess you've picked Arsenal as it was a London Derby and form can often go out of the window, but, I might be naive, the Gunners were already favourites over Fulham. I mean they didn't have to dig deep as Bournemouth did against the Hornets.

Hi Ahmed Adam,

It was definitely a tough decision between Arsenal and Bournemouth, but at least we chose a Bournemouth player for Player of the Week to recognise their great performance.

That Zaza penalty was the greatest miss ever. Have you tried Googling 'Zaza penalty'? There are some really funny memes!

Hi Milos,

Not sure about Aubameyang. He only came on as a substitute. If I'd decided to choose an Arsenal player, I would probably have gone for Alexandre Lacazette.

A nice conditional sentence for you there!
