Matchweek 1

Welcome to 'this week' from Premier Skills English, a weekly review of the action from the Premier League for learners of English across the globe. In 'this week', Jack and Rich talk about all of the weekend's action in the Premier League; the big headlines and the main talking points. We also ask you to get involved; do you agree with Jack and Rich's choices of best player, best team and best match of Matchweek 1? Make your prediction for next week's big match and tell us how your club or fantasy football team is doing. We welcome comments from all football fans and especially welcome comments from football fans who are learning English.

Intro music

Rich: Hello my name’s Rich and welcome to our new Monday round-up section on Premier Skills English.

Jack: Hi everyone. I’m Jack. That’s right, Rich. Every Monday, we are going to tell you everything that has been happening in the Premier League and use lots of football English so you can listen and practise.

Rich: We are here to talk in English about a topic that you and I both love - football. If you are learning English, one of the best ways to learn is by listening and talking about topics that you enjoy.

Jack: We are here for football fans from all over the world. We want you to improve your English and, at the same time, interact with international Premier League fans in our comments section.

Rich: We’re going to discuss last weekend’s matches, the best players, the best matches, Fantasy Football, Football English phrases and make some predictions for next weekend.

Jack: We want you to do exactly the same - either on the Premier Skills English website or the Premier Skills-British Council Facebook page - if that’s where you are listening to us.

Rich: Let’s get on with this week’s round up!

Jack: Let’s take a look at this week’s headlines …

Headlines

Rich: Chelsea stunned by Burnley at the Bridge.

Jack: Last season’s Champions, Chelsea, were beaten 3-2 at home by Burnley. Burnley went into an amazing 3-0 lead before Chelsea came back but it was too little too late for the Champions who also had two players sent off.

Rich: Huddersfield Town get off to a flying start.

Jack: Huddersfield Town celebrated their first ever match in the Premier League with a brilliant 3-0 win away at Crystal Palace. Huddersfield’s record signing, Steve Mounie, scored twice on his Premier League debut.

Rich: Lukaku gets Manchester United firing.

Jack: Romelu Lukaku scored two goals on his Premier League debut for Manchester United as they thrashed West Ham 4-0 at Old Trafford.

Rich: A great first Premier League weekend of the season. It’s great to have the football back!

Jack: Some great matches. What about that Burnley result?

Rich: Brilliant for Burnley - not such a good start for the Premier League Champions. Did you know that Burnley only won one away match the whole of last season?

Jack: Brilliant - it just shows what the Premier League is all about - anybody can beat anybody on the day. So... What about the promoted teams? Huddersfield had a great start …

Rich Newcastle and Brighton started with defeat but Huddersfield had a fantastic win - 3-0 away at Crystal Palace. Lots of people have predicted Huddersfield to be relegated, but not if they play like they did on Saturday. No way!

Jack: I think it’s brilliant for the Premier League if the underdogs can do well. What about Manchester Utd. They are looking good …

Rich: 4-0 a great start! United found it difficult at home last season and difficult to score goals but not on Sunday! 4-0 and Lukaku off the mark straight away!

Jack: Lukaku could be a good bet for top goalscorer this season!

Matchweek Awards

Rich: Right, every Monday, we’re going to give out three Matchweek awards. Player of the week, Team of the week and match of the week.

Jack: In the comments section, you need to tell us if you agree with our choices …

Rich: So many to choose from … Wayne Rooney getting the winner on his return to Everton, Steve Mounie, Romelu Lukaku and Sam Vokes all getting two goals for their clubs Huddersfield, Manchester Utd and Burnley.

Jack: But we can only choose one and our Matchweek 1 Player of the week award goes to … Manchester Utd’s Nemanja Matic.

Rich: Our next award is for Team of the week …

Jack: Tottenham, Manchester Utd and Manchester City all looked good but …

Rich: Our Matchweek 1 Team of the week goes to … (drumroll?) Huddersfield Town!

Jack: And our third and final award is for the match of the week. There were 31 goals scored on the opening weekend of the Premier League - that’s an average of over three goals per game.

Rich: And our winning match smashed that average with seven goals! Our Matchweek 1 Match of the week goes to Arsenal v Leicester City.

Jack: A 4-3 thriller! And my perfect result! A great game but with my team finishing on top!

Rich: Yep, a good result for Arsenal. My team, Liverpool, conceded an injury time equaliser. Gutted.

Fantasy Football

Rich: Many of you will be playing fantasy football this season. This is the game where you choose actual Premier League players to score you points and play in leagues with friends and other people from all over the world.

Jack: The game is organised by the Premier League and it’s totally free to play. You can choose your own team on the fantasy premier league website. The address is fantasy dot premier league dot com.

Rich: Premier Skills also has a private league which you can also join for free. The only thing you need is a private league code.

Jack: The code is 883788-212918

Rich: You can join now and each Matchweek we will announce the Fantasy Premier League team of the Week!

Jack: The Premier Skills Fantasy Premier League Team of the Week for Matchweek 1 is Saip which is managed by Samwel Ipyana from Tanzania (clapping) Saip scored 89 points and is the early leader in our Premier Skills league!

Matchweek Prediction

Jack: As you may know from last season, Rich chooses one match every week and predicts the result. We want you to say if you agree with Rich in the comments section at the bottom of the page.

Rich: This week the big match is Tottenham v Chelsea. The top two from last season clash on Matchweek 2 and it will be Tottenham’s first Premier League game at Wembley where they are playing all their home matches this season. Spurs got off to a good start with a 2-0 win at Newcastle in Matchweek 1 while Chelsea of course lost at home to Burnley. I really fancy Spurs for this match and I think Harry Kane will get his first goals of the season. I’m going for a 2-1 win to Tottenham.

Jack: It could be the biggest attendance ever at a Premier League match. 90,000 fans at Wembley - it will be a very special day.

Rich: OK ... We want you to make your predictions just put your prediction at the bottom of the page on the website or on our Facebook page.

Jack: Right, that’s all we have time for now. I hope you have enjoyed this Monday round-up. Don’t forget to join the discussion at the bottom of this page.

Rich: Or on Premier Skills - British Council facebook page if that’s where you are listening!

Jack: Bye for now and enjoy your football.

I agree with Jack and Rich, Matić played well.
I also think Huddersfield Town as the Team of the Week1.
Arsenal-Leicester City was an awesome match.
What means "underdogs"?

Hi Saandra

We talk about underdogs quite often. Normally, the underdogs are the team or players that everyone thinks will lose. So the younger, or weaker team or players are usually the underdogs and it can be really satisfying to see an underdog or underdog team do well and surprise everyone.

When Arsenal are playing Leicester, most people would expect Arsenal to win so Leicester are the underdogs.

Thanks

Jack - The Premier Skills English Team

2. The gunners played an epic match winning in injury time to the foxes.

3. Huddersfield were wonderful for their first Premier League match.

5. Mahrez played well despite his uncertain engagement this season.

Tottenham's home unbeaten run has come to an end, I think that Wimbley Stadium seems to work against the Spurs! Having predicted a 1-1 draw for Tottenham-Chelsea match, I was gutted when Alonso scored a 88th minute winner!

Hello everybody!
I think that the best player in last week's matches is Romelu Lukaku.
He scored two goals in his first match win Man Utd and he was the leader of the team; I can imagine that the transfer from a medium size team like Everton to a big team like Man Utd isn't so easy.
Instead, Huddersfield town is definitely the best team of last week, what a start!
Arsenal - Leicester was an awesome match, but also Watford - Liverpool has been a funny match; it's a battle between these.
For this weekend, I think that Chelsea will find its revenge.
They have a manager like Antonio Conte, one of the best in the world; I remember him when he trained Juventus in Italy, he was unstoppable.
In my opinion, Chelsea will win 3-1 at Wembley.

Hi Italy96

Welcome to Premier Skills English!

Yes, quite a few people (see comment below) have been asking us why we chose Matic rather than Lukaku! I agree about Conte, to win the Premier LEague in his first season in England is an amazing achievement!

Thanks for your comment.

Hi everyone!
I think Huddersfield Town must win the award to the best team in Matchweek 1 because they get a great result in their first macht in Premier League.
I choose Sam Vokes like best player of the week. He ruined the macht to the Premier League Champions, although Morata almost rescues their matters.
And my prediction for the next Tottenham-Chelsea, I see a 3-1 Tottenham.
Now, just a question: Do you use "underdogs" meaning "little teams"?
Thanks a lot

Hi Javi

Welcome to Premier Skills English! Underdogs is used to describe a team that is less likely to win. This is often a smaller team but not always. Manchester Utd were the underdogs in the UEFA Super Cup but you wouldn't describe Manchester Utd as a small team.

Litle teams or small clubs are often described as 'minnows' or when they beat a big club in a cup competition as 'giant killers'.

Hope that helps!

Matic played well but I think player of the week is Lukaku.

3-0 is a really very good result for the first match in the Premier League. Huddersfield Town is the Team of the Week.

Arsenal - Leicester City is the best game.

I watched 5 matches in Matchweek 1 (Arsenal-Leciester City, Watford - Liverpool, Chelsea - Burnley, Newcastle - Tottenham, Manchester Utd - West Ham Utd) and unfortunately Newcastle - Tottenham was the worst match . So I think Tottenham's form will not be enough to win against Chelsea. I think score will be 2-2.

Hi Ahmedmusa

The League Cup? It's a bit early in the season but I'd go for one of last season's top six. Only twice in the last 13 seasons has a team other than City, Utd, Liverpool or Chelsea won the League Cup. Who's your tip?

I think Morata is the player of the week, but Chelsea didn't have a great start.
I also think Huddersfield Town is as the Team of the week. I hope Huddersfield will stay in Premier League next year.
The best match is between Chelsea -Burnley
I has predicted that Tottenham will win 2-0 to Chelsea.

Huddersfield's on the road win was brilliant!!! I know it's too early to pick the bottom three, but It looks like Crystal Palace could be one of the relegation threatend. To concede 3 goals at home from a newly promoted Huddersfield Town, I think the Eagles are the worset team of the week. I agree with Rich on everything except on his prediction for the clash between Tottenham and Chelsea which I think will end in a 1-1 draw.

Very well the podcast.

I think that Chelsea will beat Tottenham (2-0). Very good to see Huddersfield win your first match in PL. I hope that they aren't relegated.

What means: "Lukaku gets Manchester United firing", in others words? Could you help me?

Hi RafaelRC

This is quite complicated to explain. The form 'get +someone/something + verb-ing' means to make someone or something start something. I need a coffee in the morning to get me going - to wake me up and get me working. In the example from the podcast, we said 'gets Man Utd firing' - so this means starts Man Utd firing. Firing, can mean shooting - you can fire a gun. However, it can also be used to talk about starting an engine so the example could mean Lukaku starts Man Utd's engine.

Does that help? If not, let us know and we'll talk about it more in the language podcast.

Thanks

Jack - The Premier Skills English Team

Does that help? If not, let us know and we'll talk about it more in the language podcast.

Thanks

Thank you very much! Now I get it, in portuguese this sentence means "dar partida/iniciar".

I learned a new expression.

In my opinion, the player of the week is Álvaro Morata. He scored 1 goal and helped his teamates scored 1 goal. But he can't helped Chelsea have 1 point.I think Burnley was the best of the best of the best.

Morata made a big difference when he came on as a substitute. Maybe he will start eh match against Tottenham this weekend?

My chose for the player of the week is also Nemanja Matic.I think he will be the player who miss Man united last season. My team of the week is Burnley.Winning a champion at the opening of the new season is not a small thing. The best game in Matchweek 1 is definitely Arsenal v Leicester City.
In this weekend's big match Tottenham will win.The score will be a 3-2 win for Spurs.

Hi Milos

I agree with you. Matic is a great signing for United and a player I think Chelsea will miss this season. Is Matic a big star in Serbia?
