After 125 years, AFC Bournemouth were finally promoted to the top division of English football. Bournemouth won promotion by winning the Championship in 2014/15 and played Premier League football for the first ever time in 2015/16. Their first season was also a success. They finished in 16th place and avoided relegation. Bournemouth’s nickname is ‘The Cherries’. The nickname comes from the cherry red shirts that they play in and also that the stadium was built next to a place with many cherry trees. These days, Bournemouth play in cherry red and black stripes and looks very similar to the AC Milan kit.
Bournemouth play their home matches at Dean Court, which has a capacity of 11,700, and this season will be the smallest stadium in the Premier League. The club’s badge has Bournemouth’s red and black stripes and also a footballer heading a ball. The picture is to honour Dickie Dowsett, who is one of Bournemouth’s all-time top scorers.
Bournemouth have never won a major trophy in English football but they have won the Football League Trophy, which is a cup competition played only by lower league teams. Their biggest success by far was winning the Championship and promotion to the Premier League the season before last. Bournemouth’s manager is Eddie Howe and at 38 years old is one of the youngest managers in the Premier League.
He first became manager when he was 31 and helped Bournemouth to promotion from the fourth level of English football. After two seasons with Burnley, Howe returned to Bournemouth and helped them to promotion from the third level of English football and then, last season, guided ‘the Cherries’ to the Premier League.
Bournemouth is on the south coast of England and is a popular holiday destination for tourists from the UK and abroad. Bournemouth is famous for its beaches. On a busy weekend, they attract over 100,000 visitors and over 750,000 ice creams are sold on Bournemouth’s seafront every year.
In 2017/18, Bournemouth comfortably stayed in the Premier League and finished in 12th place in the Premier League table. They were never in any real danger of relegation. They had a great start to the season and managed to deal with injuries to some of their most important players. Eddie Howe has not made lots of changes to his squad this summer but has bought Diego Alguero (£10.7M) and Jefferson Lerma (£25M) from Leganes and Levante in Sapin as well as David Brooks (£11.5M) from Sheffield United. Bournemouth's top scores were Callum Wilson and Johua King with 8 goals each, but Eddie Howe will be looking for more goals from his forwards this season.
