Dilemmas

Would you do the right thing?

Would you do the right thing?

Welcome to Lesson 6 in Activity Week - Dilemmas.

The content of this lesson is linked to the podcast you listened to in lesson three and the language you learned in lessons four and five:

Understanding Grammar - What would you do?

In lesson four, Rich spoke about dilemmas and in lesson five, Jack spoke about dilemmas and the lessons introduced lots of words and phrases about these topics. This task is your chance to use the language you have learned to give your opinion about five dilemmas:

Task

What do I need to do?

In this discussion task, we would like you to do three things:

  1. Read the article and look at the words in red. Think about what these words mean.
  2. Do the quiz at the end of the article. This quiz checks your understanding of the words in red in the article.
  3. Discuss each dilemma and say what you would do in the comments section.

Dilemmas

Would you do the right thing?

Dilemma 1 You are in a big department store and you see a man that looks quite poor putting a Manchester Utd shirt into his rucksack. Would you tell the shop assistant or keep quiet?

Dilemma 2 You are a Chelsea fan. You are leaving the stadium after your team has been beaten 3-0. You see a wallet on the floor in the car park. It’s Eden Hazard’s! And it has £2000 in it! What do you do?

Dilemma 3 You are a professional footballer. Your next match is against a very small team in the cup. Somebody offers you a lot of money to score an own goal in the last minute of the match if you are already winning by more than three goals. Should you do it?

Dilemma 1: I think if I tell to the shop assistant it would cause a very big problem to the man. So, first, I would try to talk with him and make him understand that what he is doing is wrong. And if he doesn't return the shirt he would tell the shop assistant.

Dilemma 2: I would look for a way to return him the wallet, so I would look for one of the organizers of the stadium or someone from the authority to be certain that it is received by him.

Dilemma 3: I would not accept to do this, because I think the most important thing when doing anything is to be honest.

- Not because it is something dishonest and penalized by the league

I would do the right thing, call the shop assitant and tell him what is happening.

I would look for him and give him what belongs to him.

He should not, his career would be played and he would betray his team, therefore, it is not ethical for him to do so.

Dilemma 1: Honestly I do not agree with this type of actions, it is more I am against, so if I get to be in a similar situation I would take the appropriate measures and notify the respective authorities, because however poor the person may be that should not be done.

Dilemma 2: The first thing I would do is take it to a place where they can help me deliver it to the owner, I would try to contact him to return his wallet, since this would be the right thing to do, and what I would expect them to do if, on the contrary, the wallet were mine .

1.I´m sure that there were a lot of cameras so I wouldn´t do anything.
2.I would go back to the stadium and I´d deliver the wallet at the security point.
3.A professional footballer rarely hears this type of things. I would play the match as always I do.

1. I would tell the man to return the shirt, if he does not, I should tell the clerk
2. Without hesitation he would return the wallet to Hazard, maybe doing this he could know
3. My team is already winning, I would leave the game like that, I would not accept it.

dilemma 1: I think that I can't do anything, he must know whats good and whats wrong, if a tell him something there's probability that he could answer me of a bad way and I would't like to have problems, by the way I think that the department store security will know that the man is stolling that with the cameras and the sensors on the exit.

dilemma 2: I returd the wallet to Hazar, It could be amazing having his wallet but It's not right, he have important things there like documents and his money, I must to turn him back, by the way I could know himself, It could be more amazing than stolling something.

dilemma 3: I woul't accept thta money for an owner goal, It's not a good idea because I can't do it to my team and if I do It is obviously that the other team can't win.

1.I would tell to the man putting a shirt into his backpack, that it is not well to do. Perhaps, I would buy that shirt for him if I have enough money.
2. It is a chance for me to meet a famous football player and asking him why is he going to join to Real Madrid
3. No, I would never agree to the proposition. Football has to be honest, isn't it?

1. He is an adult man so he should be responsible for his acts and concious of the consequences of stealing. In such a big departments stores there are lots of cameras and people who are in charge of thieves' capture. So why should I do their jobs?
2. The wallet isn't mine, so I'd give it back to club office.
3. Never. It's a fraud and against moral and fair play rules. Even If I were a professional footballer or an amateur I would never do that.

In all 3 situations integrity is called to play.
Integrity per my definition is doing what what is expected of you when no one is watching.

Dilemma 1
I would probably try to stop him.For example,I could say 'hey man,I saw what you were doing. Please put it back. You don't want to get yourself in trouble,do you?'I think I would give him an opportunity unless he don't appreciate my goodness.
Dilemma 2
Maybe I would post it at my social media and leave a message at his social media.Maybe he would say'keep it',or maybe he would make an appointment to let me return his wallet, then I would say to him 'Your performance sucked last weekend'
Seriously,I'm likely to give it to one of the staffs of the club.
Dilemma 3
I would never ever do that,because it's a crime.
