What do you eat?
Hi there! My name’s Jack and I work on the Premier Skills English website. You probably saw me on the Facebook Live event we did for lesson one during this activity week or heard me speaking to Rich in the podcast you listened to during lesson three.
Anyway, this lesson is all about diet and we want to help you with lots of new words and phrases connected to diet and food and also find out how healthy you are! I thought the best way to do this would be to talk about me and you. You’re going to read all about my diet and I will highlight some difficult vocabulary on the way. At the end of the article, there is an activity to check the vocabulary and a quiz to test your understanding of the article. Finally, we want you to discuss the type of food and drink you eat at the bottom of the page.
Before we start, I want you to think about what you eat. How healthy are you?
This quiz is just for fun - there are no right or wrong answers!
What do I have for breakfast?
Many people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I agree with that wholeheartedly. I never skip breakfast. However, I’m not a big fan of the traditional English breakfast. It’s just too much for me, especially first thing in the morning, I’d have to stay in the gym for the rest of the day if I wanted to burn off the calories in a traditional English breakfast. Bacon, fried eggs, sausage, black pudding, tomato, toast and beans is too much for anybody, although I have to admit to enjoying one on special occasions!
I usually go for a bowl of wholegrain cereal. Porridge is my favourite. It’s made from oats and you just add some milk. I usually go for semi-skimmed rather than full-fat. Porridge is good for your heart and I often add some berries or other fruit but I have to say that I sometimes I add a big spoonful of strawberry jam if I don’t have any fresh fruit. Oh and a cup of coffee! I just can’t function in the morning without one!
What do I have for lunch?
In the UK, people usually have lunch quite early. We might eat as early as 12 O'Clock. If people are working they often just grab a sandwich from a local bakery or shop. I’m no different and if I’m busy I often skip lunch altogether. I’m not sure how healthy it is to cut out lunch altogether! Sundays are different, though. In my house, we often have a Sunday Lunch at around three in the afternoon. This is a big traditional meal with lots of vegetables that really fills me up. We often have Roast Beef or Roast Lamb with potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cabbage and all other kinds of green leafy vegetables. We also have Yorkshire Pudding and gravy on our plates. These are quite difficult to explain so I challenge you to Google these to find out what they are! What do I have for dessert? Well, desserts are usually full of sugar and fat so I don't usually have a dessert because I'm trying to lose a bit of weight, but if someone offers me a bit of chocolate cake it's ... well, it's rude to say no, isn't it?
What do I have for dinner?
Well, if it’s a Sunday, I might not have anything more than a cup of tea and a biscuit because I’m still full from earlier. On weekdays, however, dinner is usually the biggest meal of the day. It’s not as big as our meal on a Sunday and we eat a mixture of things. We might have a pasta dish or grilled fish with steamed veggies. We always have curry once a week. I love curry. Like many people in the UK, I am a big fan of spicy food. Lamb Saag it (it’s a curry made with spinach) is my favourite. We usually boil some rice to go with it but I prefer to eat it with bread.

I think Jack's diet is healthy as it doesn't contain much sugar and fats.
My typical food is what most Zimbabweans eat. In the morning it's usually tea ,milk and a home made bread called chimodho which is made of self raising flour,sugar,salt and water.The ingredients are mixed and heated on the sausage pan for about 30mins. In the evening, I eat what we call sadza and meat. Sadza is our main meal.It is prepared from pounded maize mixed with water.

It is a very specific and easy to follow diet. I like that he does not abstain from everything and he controls the portions. my diet consists of not consuming packaged foods or with more calories than my body needs. a day I prefer a portion of fruit at different times than vegetables in a meal.

My diet, first for mik breakfast is very important so I try not to skip it, my favorite is oatmeal with milk and fruits; talking about lunch I try to have a balance between protein, vegetables and fruits, and carbohydrates, I love that my lunch contains steamed vegetables more than all broccoli; Jumping to dinner consists of various things like tuna or a sandwich the truth is very basic.
I think my diet is healthy, mostly because it contains several fruits and vegetables and also because I try to drink two liters of water daily
The Yorkshire pudding is the classic accompaniment and perfect to accompany a roast beef

My diet, first for mik breakfast is very important so I try not to skip it, my favorite is oatmeal with milk and fruits; talking about lunch I try to have a balance between protein, vegetables and fruits, and carbohydrates, I love that my lunch contains steamed vegetables more than all broccoli; Jumping to dinner consists of various things like tuna or a sandwich the truth is very basic.
I think my diet is healthy, mostly because it contains several fruits and vegetables and also because I try to drink two liters of water daily
The Yorkshire pudding is the classic accompaniment and perfect to accompany a roast beef
