Hi there! My name’s Rich and I work on the Premier Skills English website. You probably saw me on the Facebook Live event we did for lesson one during this activity week or heard me speaking to Jack in the podcast you listened to during lesson three.

Anyway, this lesson is all about fitness and we want to help you with lots of new words and phrases about fitness and exercise and also find out how fit you are! I thought the best way to do this would be to talk about me and you. You’re going to read all about my fitness levels and I will highlight some difficult vocabulary on the way. At the end of the article, there is an activity to check the vocabulary and a quiz to help you think about your fitness levels. Finally, we want you to discuss what you do to keep fit at the bottom of the page. 

Before we start, I want you to think about the exercise you do every week. How fit are you? 

This quiz is just for fun - there are no right or wrong answers!

Do I go to the gym?

I am not someone who you could describe as superfit. I don’t go to the gym to pump iron (lift weights) three times a day. In fact, I don’t think I’ve been to a gym since 2007 and that was only to meet a friend for a drink after his workout. I don’t like gyms. Actually, I hate them! I just get so bored. Running on a treadmill that goes nowhere or getting on a bicycle without any wheels. It doesn’t make any sense to me. The other problem is that the gym doesn’t motivate me. I have never been out of breath in a gym because when I get tired I just stop. Maybe I’m just a bit jealous of the other people in the gym with a better physique than me. I’m not sure.

Is that Rich in the gym? No, I don't think so!

How fit am I?

Just because I don’t go to the gym doesn’t mean that I don’t do any exercise. When I said I wasn’t superfit earlier that’s not to say that I’m out of breath after walking up some stairs or absolutely knackered after taking a couple of shopping bags to my car. Oh! The car! That’s probably something I should use less. There’s probably no need to take the car when I need a pint of milk. The shop is only about two hundred metres from my house!     

What do I do?

As I was saying, I’m not superfit but I’m not a total couch potato either. I could probably do with losing a bit of weight, but who doesn’t? What do I do? I like to go out on my bike or go for a run. I do this two or three times a week. I live in the mountains. It’s great to get out in the open air. It’s much better than being stuck in the gym going nowhere. I think I need competition to motivate myself. I do a lot of sport. I love playing five-a-side football, tennis and squash. Maybe I don’t have enough self-discipline but I am very competitive. If I have the chance of beating someone else I will push myself that extra mile.

Rich says that he doesn't go to the gym but that he's not a couch potato either. I'm not sure I believe him!

I sometimes go to the gym but I rather go running in the fresh air. I play paddle. I have been playing paddle for three years and it helps me keep fit. I think exercising is very important if you want to be in shape.

Yes, of course i love watching sport from my sofa but it doesn't mean i'm a couch potato. i'd love to play many kind of sport but i don't have much time, i just can play football with my friend at weekend, however i walk to school everyday, i hope it's helpful to me. I still have problem, and it's seem to be a little bit different to many of you, i look quite thin and i want to raise a bit of weight. Can exercise help me?

Yes, of course i love watching sport from my sofa but it doesn't mean i'm a couch potato. i'd love to play many kind of sport but i don't have much time, i just can play football with my friend at weekend, however i walk to school everyday, i hope it's helpful to me. I still have problem, and it's seem to be a little bit different to many of you, i look quite thin and i want to raise a bit of weight. Can exercise help me?

I m playing basketball for local club,also I love to go to the gym to pump iron.I agree with you about running on a treadmill.That can be very boring,and I hate do doing that.Pople usualy have prejudices about weight training.For someone a wight training can be push ups,pull ups,sit ups,you dont need to lift wights every time when you go to the gym,and doing stuff like isolation exercise.Also choice of exercise can be important.I doing multijoint, exercise like squats,deadlifts,some variation of push and pull.Yes this can be little boring,but that give me result.I live in a small suburb and there is a lot forest around my.I go to walking with my dog.Usualy I do that 3 times per week.My opinion about exercise that it is not only physique,I doing that because I wanna be health.Competition is really great stuff.You always trying to win,and push yourself harder.I think that competition make us better.And I love to compete with better.Only than you can improve your skills and will.

no, i am not. i prefer do some sport, like playing basketball. yes i love playing it. for me, i need to do some exercise when i got more loud of weight to get me back lighter. just in case to shaping my body again, not become a part of my common activity...

I can't push myself to run or to go to the gym. All I'd prefer from any physical activity is swimming. But I don't have time to go to the swimming pool. So I am a real couch potato. Shame on my head. It's only me who is responsible for my physique.

You have will and that is important.You start wiht some light walking in the nature.That can be very usefull and nice too.When you get better and motivation begin to rise you can go to the gym or swimming pool.You dont need to spend all day in gym,do some light exercise for 40 minutes 3 times per week and that will be enough for begining.From that point you start doing great thing for your body and just keep going.

Much more exciting to сhoose a new route daily than just running on the spot and look in the window. And you know, when I run in the rain or overcoming the snowdrifts, I'm internally much exalted than from unhindered running on a treadmill.
As you said, “I’m not superfit but I’m not a total couch potato either” too;) I will repeat the answer somewhat from a previous stage. Well, traditionally on Sunday I play football. And also I have an exercise bike at home, and when there is a game late in the evening (like yesterday's Arsenal game from Man City) I watch the game and at the same time I spin the pedals. But I'll be frank: yesterday I did not cycling around on one:)

Well, as I have already told on another posts, I haven't got enough time to do sport! I used to play basketball when I was younger because I am really competitive. Due to this, I usually like the most conpetitive sports!

I have never been in a gym! Hahaha! If I could practise anything, I would prefer practising sports outdoor, of course.

But, undoubtely, I am afraid I prefer watching sports on TV from my sofa ;)

I have to admit that sport is important at all in my life...
