Manchester City were founded in 1880, but they were originally called St. Mark’s and then Ardwick, before becoming Manchester City in 1894. Manchester City’s nickname is ‘City’ and their manager is Josep 'Pep' Guardiola, who had lots of success managing Bayern Munich in Germany and Barcelona in Spain. City play in sky-blue shirts and socks, and white shorts.
Manchester City play their home games at The City of Manchester Stadium in Manchester, which was originally used for the Commonwealth Games in 2002. The stadium holds 47276, which is less than their previous stadium, Maine Road, which in 1934 held 84,569, which is a record for a club stadium in English football. ‘Sometimes you have a noisy neighbour. You cannot do anything about that. They will always be noisy. You just have to get on with your life, put your television on and turn it up a bit louder.’ Alex Ferguson talking about Man City in 2009.
Manchester City won the Premier League title for the first time in over 40 years on the last day of the season in 2012. It was one of the most exciting season finales ever. Before the final games of the season, City and Manchester United were level on points at the top of the table. But, City had a better goal difference. The matches started at the same time - City were at home to QPR and United were playing Sunderland. United scored and went on to win 1-0. City had to win. In the 66th minute, QPR scored a second goal and were winning 2-1. In the 92nd minute, Dzeko scored for City but they still needed one more goal. In the 94th minute, Aguero scored for City and the blue half of Manchester went crazy.
'One of my dreams was to play here as a player. It was not possible, but now my dream has come true. The atmosphere here, wow, it is amazing. I want to live that in life. I come here to learn about the way people live here, for my family and my kids and I want to be a good manager in England.' Pep Guardiola, City's new manager.
In 2016/17, by their recent standards, Manchester City had a poor season. City finished in 3rd place, 15 points behind the Champions - Chelsea. They have some fantastic talent in their squad, with players from all over the world. Some of their stars include; Sergio Aguero (Argentina), Kevin De Bruyne (Belgium), David Silva (Spain), and Gabriel de Jesus (Brazil). Guardiola will want to add more top players to the squad and this summer has already signed Bernardo Silva (Monaco), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Danilo (Real Madrid) and Benjamin Mendy (Monaco). City’s top scorer last season, and for the sixth consecutive season, was Aguero with 33 goals. Aguero had another fantastic season and if he plays as well this season can any other team stop City?
