Set induction (3 mins)

Teacher asks questions related to any films that students have watched.

  • Have you watched any films before?
  • What kind of film?
  • Teacher introduces one film. (suitable for children and have intended specific learning outcomes)

Get students to describe the film. (characters, etc.)

Presentation 1 (7 mins)

Various puppets which represent the comparative and superlative adjectives are presented.

  • Have you watched ‘Frozen?’
  • Today, let’s watch a short clip of that film.
  • Who is she? Is she younger or is she older?
  • Yes. She is younger.
  • Which one is larger? Is it this castle?
  • Which one is the largest?

*Continue with other puppets.

Presentation 2 (15 mins)

Presentation of comparative and superlative adjectives in a chart.

  • We have three different clouds here.
  • From this cloud, can you notice something similar in them?
  • Yes. It has ‘-er’ at the back of the adjective.
  • What about this cloud?
  • Yes. It has ‘-est’ at the back of the adjective.
  • For this cloud, we name it as comparative adjectives and these are superlative adjectives.
  • Can you see the difference?
  • We use comparatives to compare two nouns.
  • A superlative adjective is used to compare three or more objects, people or places.
  • Comparatives are normally formed by adding ‘-er’ to the adjective and placing ‘than’ behind the adjective.
  • Superlatives are normally formed by adding ‘-est’ to the adjective and placing ‘the’ before the adjective.

Practice 1 (10 mins)

Pupils are divided into groups. Pupils play ‘BINGO’ game.

  • Now, we are going to play ‘BINGO’ game.
  • Each group will get this ‘BINGO’ board and 25 cards of adjectives.
  • Insert these adjective cards into each pocket on the board.
  • You may arrange it anyhow you like.
  • We will start with this group. Choose one adjective on the board.
  • Say out loud the comparative and superlative of the adjective chosen.
  • For example, you choose ‘fast,’ you need to answer ‘fast, faster, and fastest.’ If your answer is correct, you take out that card from the pocket. If it is wrong, do not take the card out.
  • The steps are repeated for the next group until one group is able to get five empty pockets in line.
  • The first group to get ‘BINGO’ is the winner.

Practice 2 (10 mins)

Pupils are asked to complete the question in worksheet A. Worksheet B is to be given to advanced students.

  • Please complete the worksheet given.
  • You will have to fill in the blanks with the correct comparative and superlative adjectives based on the pictures provided.
  • After that, construct sentences based on the adjectives given.
  • You must use either comparative or superlative adjectives.
  • I have provided you with the examples in the worksheet.
  • Call me if you need any help.
  • You may hand in your work after you have completed it.

Production (12 mins)

Pupils play an activity called as “Pass the magical ball.”

  • I have one magical ball here and with this ball, we are going to play one activity.
  • The game is called as “Pass the magical ball!”
  • Let’s move and make one big circle.
  • When I play the music, this ball will go around in a circle, but you have to close your eyes first.
  • You can only open your eyes when the music stops.
  • If you get the ball, read the adjective on the ball and say out loud the comparative and superlative of that adjective.
  • Copy the adjective that your friend has answered in your workbook. Is that clear?
  • After that, other students will close their eyes again and the student who receives the ball earlier will put the ball in front of your friend. It is up to you to choose who is next.
  • The activity continues.

Closure (3 mins)

Teacher consolidates the lesson by playing a song on the adjectives that students have learnt. Students sing along.

  • Based on the adjectives that you have learnt today, we are going to sing a song.
  • Listen to me first and repeat after me.
