The term soccer is still used in British English, but it has become less popular in recent years. It was common when I was a kid.
It comes from the term Association Football which was what was used to distinguish football from rugby football (what rugby was called in the past). I understand that these days, there is some feeling about the term because of the American English use of 'football' for what in the UK is 'American football', but I think the term is still acceptable. However, as some people do get worked up about it, you're probably safer using the word football.
