Burnley FC

Burnley were promoted to the Premier League as Champions of the Championship in 2015/16. They will be playing in the Premier League for the third time and have been promoted after just one season outside of the top division. They will be hoping to do better than the previous two times they were in the Premier League. This is because they finished in 18th place on both occasions and were relegated.

Where is Burnley?

Burnley is in North West England and traditionally their biggest rivals are Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, both these teams currently play in the Championship. Burnley play at Turf Moor, which has a capacity of 21,401. But, the record attendance at the stadium was 54,755 for an FA Cup match against Huddersfield Town in 1924.

Burnley players celebrate a goal.

Burnley have played at Turf Moor since 1883, making it one of the oldest stadiums in the Premier League, only Newcastle’s St. James’ Park (1880) and Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge (1877) are older. Burnley play in claret and sky blue shirts and socks with white shorts, they chose these colours in 1910 to imitate Aston Villa, who were the strongest team in English football at that time. Burnley’s nickname is The Clarets, after the colour of their shirts.

What is the history of Burnley FC?

The club was founded in 1882 and in 1888 became one of the original twelve founding members of the Football League. Burnley are one of only three teams (the others are Wolverhampton Wanderers and Preston North End) to have won all four professional divisions in English football. Despite spending most of their history in the top two divisions, Burnley didn’t play in the top division at all between 1976 and 2009. They have won two league titles (1920-21 and 1959-60) and one FA Cup (1914), but these honours were won a long time ago.

Which team are Burnley's main rivals?

Burnley manager - Sean Dyche.

Burnley has a population of about 73,000 and is the smallest town in the UK to have a Premier League club. There are many other past and present Premier League clubs in the north-west of England including Manchester City, Everton, Manchester United, Liverpool, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Burnley’s main rivals Blackburn Rovers. The match between Burnley and Blackburn is sometimes called ‘The Cotton Mills Derby’ because both towns were famous for their cotton mills in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Blackburn have 41 wins and Burnley have 40 in the Cotton Mills Derby.

Who are Burnley's star players?

In 2015/16, won the Championship by four points and only lost five matches all season. Burnley’s top scorer was Andre Gray, with 25 league goals. Gray is Burnley's record signing, he cost about £6 million. Burnley fans will be hoping that Gray and strike partner, the Welsh international, Sam Vokes (16 goals) can score the goals to keep Burnley in the Premier League for more than one season.  Other players to look out for this season are; English goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who was in England's Euro 2016 squad and ex-Manchester Utd youngster, Michael Keane, the defender was named in the Championship team of the season. Under Sean Dyche, Burnley have been playing good football and not conceding many goals. Claret fans will hope that Burnley can score enough goals back in the Premier League but will probably need to spend more if they want to stay up next season.

Prediction 2016/17: 17th

Burnley has almost the same football t-shirts like A.Villa and W.Ham, don't they? I wonder if they can get back in the PL next year or they will have to wait for many years?

Yes, claret and blue! Burnley changed their colours to be the same as Villa, who were the most successful team in England at that time (1910 smiley).

Burnley will probably play in the play-off this season. It is never easy to get back in the PL through play-off but hardly they can reach top of the table.

Burnley plays well in the championship, but it can't appropriately strengthen its squad for struggling in the premier league
