Tottenham Hotspur was founded in 1882 and play their home games at White Hart Lane. The stadium is in North London and has a capacity of 36236. Tottenham's nickname is 'Spurs' and the team plays in white shirts, navy-blue shorts and white socks. Tottenham are sometimes called 'The Lilywhites' due to the colour of their shirts. The current manager is Mauricio Pochettino, who is the second Argentinian to manage Spurs in the Premier League, the first was Ossie Ardiles. Ardiles managed Spurs in 1993-94 and also made over 200 appearances for the club.
Tottenham are famous for their success in the FA Cup, winning the competition eight times, but their most recent trophy was the League Cup, in 2009. In 1963, they became the first British club to win a European Competition (the European Cup Winners’ Cup), and since then have won the UEFA Cup (now the Europa League) twice. Tottenham have always been famous for playing exciting, attacking football. In 2015/16, Tottenham continued that tradition, with Premier League Young Player of the Season, Dele Alli, playing some great football and Harry Kane, with 25 goals, winning the Premier League's Golden Boot.
"If you don’t win anything, you have had a bad season’’ - Bill Nicholson, ex-Tottenham Manager.
Tottenham’s ground is in North London, so lots of Spurs fans come from this area and the regions around it. There are many other clubs in London, and Tottenham have strong rivalries with Chelsea and West Ham United, but their closest and strongest rival is North London neighbours, Arsenal.
Tottenham's name comes from the name of a 14th-century Tottenham man, Sir Harry Hotspur, who featured in one of Shakespeare’s plays, Henry the Fourth. He was a soldier, and a very fierce fighter. So, the team from Tottenham adopted this name and became Tottenham Hotspur, which is shortened to ‘Spurs’.
In 2015/16, Tottenham Hotspur finished 3rd in the Premier League and qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Spurs finished in their highest ever Premier League position but it could have been much, much more. With just a few matches left, Spurs were battling with Leicester for the Premier League title. After a disappointing end to the season, Tottenham slipped behind Arsenal but they can look back at the season with pride and some brilliant football. Under manager, the Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs fans will hope their team can challenge for the title again this season. With players like the England international Harry Kane, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and Danish international Christian Eriksen, Spurs have some of the most exciting players in the Premier League and they have added Victor Wanyama from Southampton and bought Vincent Janssen to help Kane in attack. Can they improve on last season’s 3rd position?
