Chelsea Football Club play at Stamford Bridge in south-west London. The stadium was built in 1877 and became home to Chelsea Football Club in 1905 when the club was founded. The stadium capacity is 41,798 which makes it the eighth largest in the Premier League. Chelsea wear blue shirts and shorts when they are at home and their nickname is the Blues. Their club badge has changed five times since the club was founded and today's crest has a blue lion holding a staff.
Chelsea are one of the most successful football teams of the Premier League era. Since 1996, they have won 4 League titles, 6 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Champions League. They haven't always been so successful. Before 1996, Chelsea had only won 1 League title and 3 cups. Since the Premier League was founded, only Manchester United have won more trophies than Chelsea. Chelsea won their first UEFA Champions League in 2012 when they beat Bayern Munich on penalties in Munich. This came four years after losing their first Champions League final to Manchester United... on penalties.
Chelsea's new manager Antonio Conte is well-known for his success as a player and manager with the Italian club, Juventus. He won the Italian title five times as a player and three times as a manager with Juve. For the last two seasons, he was coach of the Italian national side.
“I think the best football is currently played in England followed by the leagues in Spain and Germany.” Antonio Conte
Conte's first task at Chelsea will be to help the fans forget Jose Mourinho, who was Chelsea's most successful ever manager. With Mourinho as manager, Chelsea won the Premier League three times, most recently in 2014/15. Although Conte has never played or managed outside his native Italy in a 30-year career, communicating in English should not be a problem. Chelsea's goalkeeper, Asmir Begovic, has already said that Conte speaks good English. Conte is well-known for his tactical knowledge and many comparisons have been made with the management style of Alex Ferguson and Chelsea's ex-manager, Jose Mourinho.
"I always compare my work to that of a tailor, who makes a suit out of the material that is available to him. He can only do what the material allows him to do". Antonio Conte, Chelsea's new manager.
In 2015/16, Chelsea, as reigning Champions, were expected to fight for the title again but they had a disastrous start to the season. They lost nine of their first sixteen matches and were only one point above the relegation zone when Jose Mourinho was sacked. He was replaced by Guus Hiddink until the end of the season. Chelsea eventually finished tenth and failed to qualify for European football. ‘The Blues’ top scorer was Spanish international Diego Costa with 12 goals. With players like Eden Hazard, Costa, Willian and Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea should have a much better season this year. Can they win the Premier League again this season?
Prediction 2016/17: 3rd
